HENRY J. SEIBEL, JR, AND SALLIE M. SEIBEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
LEGGIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,882, dated April 15, 1884-.
(No model.)
ments in Leggins; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to leggins for men,
Women, and children; and the improvements consist in making the said leggin of a waterproof material, open from top to bottom, with one side overlapping the other, and provided with two rows of lacing-hooks, and having stitched on the top edge thereof a narrow strip of any suitable material that will strengthen the leggin and serve as a garter to keep it in the proper position on the leg of the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the leggin fitted on and laced up ready for wearing. Fig. 2 represents the leggin opened out, and showing the inside thereof. The dotted lines indicate the seams connecting the parts.
A A A are the parts of the leggin, made of waterproof material, cut and fitted together so as to conform to the shape of the leg.
I) b are rows of hooks on either side for lacing the leggin. One of the rows of lacing-hooks is placed close to the edge, and the opposite row some distance back, so that when the leggin is fitted to the wearer one side overlaps the other.
.a is the lacingrcord; b 1), strips of light leather or other suitable material stitched to theleggin, and having the lacing-hooks secured thereto.
d is a fastener for the upper end of the lacing-cord, the lower end of said cord being secured to the bottom of the leggin.
a is a narrow strip of leather, elastic webbing, or any suitable material, stitched to the upper edge of the leggin. This strip serves not only to strengthen the leggin, but, as the fastener (1 is secured at one end thereof and one of the lacing-hooks at the other, it thus forms a garter and retains the leggin in the proper position.
e is the leather strip passing under the boot to hold the leggin down.
Aleggin formed in this way, of water-proof material, is more especially adapted to the use of ladies and children, as it effectually protects the stocking and shoe-top and prevents the wet skirts of the wearer from coming in contact therewith. The overlap allows the leggin to be laced snugly to the leg of the wearer,
and the garter a holds it securely in position after being laced to fit.
Having thus described our invention. what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. Anew article of manufacture, consisting of a leggin made of water-proof material and open from top to bottom, and having thereon the two rows of lacing-hooks b b, one of said rows of hooks being set back, so as to form an overlapping edge, the lacing-cord c, and the garter a, secured to the top of the leggin, sub stantially as shown.
2. A leggin made of water-proof material, and having the rows of lacing-hooks b b attached thereto, so as to form an overlapping edge, in combination with the lacing-cord o and garter a, secured to the top of the leggin, said garter having at one end thereof a fastener, d, and at the other end one of thelacinghooks b, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. SEIBEL, JR. SALLIE M. SEIBEL.
