county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Legging and Sock, of which the following is a specification. Our invention relates to improvements in combined leggings and socks, patented-to us in the Dominion of Canada under N0. 87 ,665 on the 7th of J une, 1904, and application for which was filed in the United States Patent Oflice under Serial No. 190,047 on the 21st of January, 1904; and the object of the present invention is,first, to form a blank for the sock, so'that the liability of ripping of the sewing at sewed notches of toe and heel will be reduced to a minirlium, and, secondly, to provide means 2 for connecting the legging to the sock, whereby the sock and legging may be worn with or without the rubber shoe and in which the rubber shoe may be readily fitted and snugly held between the'bottom of the legging and sock; and it consists, essentially, first, of a sock formed-ofa blank. havingthe notches cut in such a manner as when sewed together the slits formed thereby will not come opposite each other, and, secondly, of attaching the 0 legging to the sock at the upper edge of the sock and; allowing of the bottom end of the legging to extend as a flap below the connection of the legging to the sock, and of a flap for the legging provided with notches whereby the lace of the sock may be continued from the front of the sock up through the notches in the flap and hole in the legging up along the front of the legging, and a separate lace for connecting the bottom of the legging together, the parts being otherwise constructed and arranged as hereinafter more particularly ex .pla1ned.-

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved combinedlegging and sock, the bottom flap of the legging being shown in dotted lines turned up as it would be to enable the Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing the legging open. Fig. 3 is a detail of the blank.

By this means itwill be readily seen thatthe liability of ripping of these notches when they are opposite each other, as described in our former patent, is reduced to a minimum. Especially should one of the sewed notches rip there would not be any liability of the-other on the opposite side-of the central seam being ripped, seeing that they are not opposite each other, and the same thread would not pass from one to the other.

The blank A is formed up, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, with a central slit A, provided with holes 5 at one side and hooks Sat the other, through which pass the lace B, as indioated, suchlace extending upwardly to the top of the sock and passing inwardly to and through a hole 5v in-the sock, whence it extendsoutwardly and passes through a hole 7' in the legging portion 0.

The top of the laces l5 and B are held by any suitable form of fastener, which it is not i necessary here to describe.

The legging is secured to the topedge of the sock by a row or rows of stitching E, so that a depending flap (l is formed around the ankle portion of the sock. In the front; edge of the flap C" at each edge'of the opening we provide a row of lace-holes 10 and hooks 11, and in the row of lace-holes we provide a lace 1 B, whiclrwhen the flap D is folded under the l flap Q is hooked upon'the hooks 11 and tight- I ened. Of course eyelets may be substituted for hooks. It will, however, be understood that the logging and sock will be completely laced together by the lace B, with of'course the exception of the portion C and this is left loose, so that it may be turned up, as indicated in Fig. 1, in order that the rubber shoe maybe brought up upon the sock nearly to the top' thereof, whereupon the flap may be turned down and laced tightly, as hereinbefore described and as shown in Fig. 1.

The leather sock of the legging will of course be still intact and he can go about the shanty or indoors much more comfortably than if he had to keep the rubber shoe 0n.. Upon going out again all he has to do is to put the rubber shoes on and relace the bottom part of the legging over the top of the rubber shoe. I

What We claim as our invention is-' 1. In acombined legging and sock, a blank having the central V-shaped notch, and, an irregularly-placed notch on each side of the cenl tral notch, whereby when the centralseam is made through the central notch and o 'iposing edges of the blank the scam of the cross I notches will end in the central seam at points i remote from each other as and for the purpose I specified. v l 2. 'lhcwmbination with thesock havingtl'ie l central slit and lace-holding means on opposite sides of the slit,'0f the legging secured intermediate of its length to the top of the sock and having the overlapping portion or flap extending over the ankle portion of the sock, said legging having a front opening and laceholding means on oppositesides of said opening and a hole extending through the front of the legging near the top of the sock, whereby the lace of the sock is extended through the lace-holding means of the legging as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination with the sock havingthe central slit and lace-holding means on opposite sides of' the slit, of the legging secured intermediate of its length tothe top of the sock and having the overlapping portion or flap extending over the ankle portion of the sock, said legging having a front opening and laceholding means on opposite sides of said opening and a hole extending through the front of the legging near the top of the sock, whereby the lace of the seek is extended through the lace-holding means of the legging, and the front flap of the legging provided with a notch, whereby a lower supplemental flap is formed and the lace of the sock is carried through to the lace-holding means at the front of the legging as and for the purpose specified.

4. The combination with the sock having the central slit and lace-holding means on opposite sides of the slit, of the legging secured intermediate of its length to the top of the sock and having the overlapping portion or flap extending over the ankle portion of'the sock, said legging havinga front opening and laceholding means on opposite sides of said opening a hole extending through the front of the legging near the top of the sock, whereby the lace of the sock is extended through the. laceholding means of the legging, the front flap of the legging provided with a notch, Whereby a lower supplemental flap is formed and the lace of the sock is carried through to the lace-holding means at the front of the legging and a lace passing through the lace-holding means on one edge of the overlapping .ilap or portion of the logging and adapted to be fastened to the lace-holding means on the supplemental flap of the legging to fasten the leg ging completely together as and for the purpose specified. 1
