No. 128,345, Patented Ju ne 25,1872,
W'TNESSES- INVENTOfi UNITED STATES LYMAN U. WILLIAMS, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,345, dated J one 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN U. WILLLAMS, of La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe .and State of Indiana, have invented a new part of this specification, and to the lettersand figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention.
This invention has relation to means for securing plow or road shoes to the foot in such a manner that dust cannot easily find its way inside; and it consists in providing the sides of the opening of the upper each with an inside flap, arranged to extend toward the middle of the opening and under the ton gueleather, thus forming a tight joint through which the dust cannot well pass.
In the accompanying drawing the letter A represents the outer or ordinary flaps of an open-quarter plow or road shoe, constructed in the usual style. Perforations are provided along the edges of these flaps for lacing. B represents the tongue, out with considerable breadth so that it will extend its side edges well into the angle between the flaps. 0 represents the inner flaps, cut to coincide or near- 1y coincide with the outer or lacing flapsA and attached thereto by stitching. These inner flaps or flies pass under the instep leather, and are also usually fastened in the seam uniting the upper and quarters of the shoe. These flies close over the instep, and are covered by the tongue, which is covered by the outer flaps A.
It is evident that when the shoe is laced the edges of the tongue will be tightly clamped between the flaps on each side, so that dust will find a difiicult entrance.
I do not claim double-flaps broadly, as I am aware they have been used before with the extra strip sewed to the outside of the upper, necessitating the external attachment of the tongue piece.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The road-shoe having the quarter-flaps A outside the tongue B extending from the vamp, and the flies O sewed to the inside of said quarter-flaps, said parts being all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN U. WILLIAMS.
