Description

A. LUTZ.
SHOE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.14, 1910.
Patnted Aug. 30, 1910.
' INVENTOR QVDFEI KZZJTZ U E 5 S n w Tn: mwms PETER snmaron n L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW LUTZ, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW LUTZ, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at N. S. Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to shoes, and the objects of my invention are to provide a shoe with an upper consisting of comparatively few parts easily and quickly assembled; second, to provide a shoe having the appearance of a lace shoe that can be easily removed from the foot without unfastening the lace-thereof; third, to provide a shoe with novel fasteners that will permit of the shoe being easily and quickly fastened upon a foot, and fourth, to furnish a shoe with a novel fastener that allows the upper of the shoe to be adjusted to comfortably fit the ankle or instep.
I attain the above objects by a shoe construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from, the scope of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shoe partly open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an upper front piece. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of an upper rear piece. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of a portion of the upper showing one of the fasteners. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a heel piece. Fig. 6 is a plan of a blank toe piece. Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view of the upper front piece. Fig. 8 is a plan of the tongue.
A shoe constructed in accordance with my invention comprises a sole and heel, a toe piece, heel pieces, upper front pieces,'upper rear pieces, and fasteners for connecting the front edges of the rear pieces to the rear edges of the front pieces of the upper.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a sole having a heel 2 and secured to the front edges of the sole 1 in the usual manner is a toe piece 8 having the forward end thereof reinforced and covered by a cap 1. The toe piece 3 is made of a single piece and has the rear end thereof cut to form a central tongue 5 and side extensions 6, these ex- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1910.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910. Serial No. 549,196.
; tensions extending rearwardly to the bridge of the sole 1 to be connected to heel pieces 7 having the rear ends thereof connected above the rear part of the heel 2, while the forward ends of the heel pieces are sewed or otherwise connected to the extensions 6, as at 8. Secured to the upper forward edges of the heel pieces 7 are upper front pieces 9, these front pieces having the front edges thereof provided with eyelets 10 to accommodate a lace 11.
The front pieces 9 are sewed or otherwise connected, as at 12, to the tongue 5, and con nected to said tongue is a tongue piece 13 which adds rigidity to the front pieces of the upper. The front pieces 9 at the rear edges thereof and adjacent to the lower edges are cut away, as at 14, for inserts of elastic material 15.
Connected to the upper edges of the heel pieces 7 are rear upper pieces 16, these pieces being connected, as at 17, in vertical alinement with the connection of the heel pieces 7 at the rear end of the shoe. The forward edges of the pieces 16 are adapted to overlap the rear edges of the pieces 9, and the forward edges of the pieces 16 are provided with fasteners adapted to retain the rear pieces 16 in engagement with the ankle of a limb and to retain the shoe upon the foot. It is preferable to use two fasteners and each fastener comprises a male member and a female member, the male member consisting of a plate 18 having one end thereof provided with a link 19 which is connected to the edge of one of the rear pieces by a strap 20. The opposite end of the plate 18 is reduced, as at 21, and provided with a longitudinal rib or head 22. Connected to the plate 18 is a clasp 23 normally held in a closed position by a spring 24 arranged in the rib or bead 22 of the plate 18. The forward end of the clasp 23 forms a tooth 25 adapted to engage in notches 26'provided therefor in a rib or bead 27 forming partof the plate 28 of the female member. One end of the plate 28 is provided with a link 19, similar to the plate 18 and is connected to the rear piece 16 in a similar manner to the plate 18.
A shoe constructed in accordance with my invention consists of comparatively few parts and has the appearance of an ordinary lace shoe, but can be more quickly adjusted to the ankle and more readily removed from the foot.
\Vhat I claim, is: to the tongue of said toe-piece, and upper A shoe including a toe-piece having side rear pieces connected to the upper edges of extensions and a centrally-disposed tongue, the heel pieces and having the front edges said side extensions having curved upper thereof overlapping the upper front pieces.
