rrnn STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JAMES (J. TETERS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,206, dated March 6, 1877 application file January 15,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs G. TETERS, of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Button-Fastening; and I do hereby declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of devices for attaching buttons to clothing and other articles of wear in which the eye of the button, after being passed through a hole in the material, is secured by a tongue which is formed on or attached to a metal plate.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a piece of cloth, or other material to which the button is to be fastened. B is the button, the eye D of which passes through a hole in the piece-of cloth A, and is secured by having the tongue 0 of a metal plate, F, passed through it. This tongue is formed by stamping a longitudinal -strip out of the plate F across its middle, so that one end of the strip is free while the other end remains attached to the plate. I then make a kink or bend, S, in the middle of the tongue,
so that when it has been introduced into the from riding on the edges of the cut on each sideof the tongue. I make a semicircular enlargement of the slot, I, in the plate on each side of the bend, so that the eye can settle down until the button lies close to the opposite side of the cloth or material; otherwise the shank would be so long that the button would appear awkward. This enlargement of the slot also allows the tongue to be pressed back into the slot or opening in the plate after the button is secured.
through which a needle can pass, so that the plate can be sewed to the material, and thus prevented from turning or shifting from its place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A buttonfastener consisting of the plate F, with its bent or kinked tongue 0 and enlargement of the slot I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The plate F, having the tongue 0, provided with the kink or.bend S, and provided with semicircular enlargement in slotI and holes 0, in combination with the button B, with its eye D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I havehereunto'set my hand and seal.
JAMES C. TETERS.
