CHARLES L. VIEDRIOII, OF BUFFALO, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PRATT &
' LETCHVVORTH, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKLE-CLIP.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,028, dated February 2, 1892. Application filed February 20, 1890. Serial No. 341,096. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. WInDnIoH, a citizen of the United States. residing at the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckle-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the metallic or sheet metal clips employed for attaching buckles to straps without the necessity of sewing.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap clip of this class which is readily attached to the strap and which dispenses with the use of rivets or other separate fastenings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clip applied to a strap. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, with a portion of the strap-loop broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the clip attached to the strap. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 5 is a cross-section in line a: on, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the outer leg of the clip, showing the form of the connecting tongues or lips before the same are bent. Fig. 7 is a detached perspective View of the strap-loop.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the strap, and B the buckle, which is attached to the strap by my improved clip.
0 C represent, respectively, the inner and outerlegs of the clip embracing the end of the strap and which are constructed of a single piece or strip of sheet metal bent or doubled at its center to form a loop or eye 0, in which the inner cross bar of the buckle is confined. The clip is slotted or recessed in its doubled portion in the usual way to clear the eye of the tongue, which is pivoted to the inner cross-bar of the buckle.
d 61 represent tongues or lips formed on the outer leg 0 of the clip and which pass through openings or slits in the strap A and project with their ends through openings 6 in the inner leg 0 of the clip. The projecting ends of the tongues cl are bent or clinched against the face of the inner clipleg, as clearly represented in the drawings, whereby the two parts of the clip are tightly connected together and securely attached to thestrap. The connecting-tongues d are formed by cutting converging slits in the outer leg of the clip, as represented in Fig.6, and bending the tongues so produced i wardly at right angles to the leg, as represented in Figs. 3 and 5. By thus providing the clip with tongues which are cut out of its body the fastening required to connect the two parts of the clip does not materially add to the cost of the clip, and the same is readily attached to the strap without sewing and without rivets or other separate fastenings.
E represents a metallic loop arranged near the end of the strap A and which receives and confines the free end of the strap, which is passed through the buckle This loop is open in its inner or rear side, as represented in Figs. 5 and '7, and its ends e are arranged parallel with the outer cross-bar of the loop and clamped between the inner side of the strap A and the inner leg 0 of the clip, as clearly represented in Fig. 5. The end portions of the loop are bent upwardly at their corners to form spurs or pointed projections f, which embed themselves in the strap, holding the loop against longitudinal displacement on the strap and also preventing its end portions from spreading and being withdrawn from between the strap and clip. The ends of the loop are placed between the strap and inner leg of the clip before the parts of the latter are secured together and the spurs of the loop are pressed into the strap in the act of uniting the cliplegs.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a buckle-clip consisting of a single strip of sheet metal doubled 0 to form clip-legs adapted to rest against opposite sides of a strap, one of said legs being provided with a connnecting tongue or spur which penetrates the strap and the other with an opening for receiving said tongue, 5 of an open metallic strap-loop having its sides provided with inwardly projecting flanges seated between the inner leg of the clip and the strap and terminating in spurs which embed themselves in the strap and we prevent lengthwise displacement of the loop, substantially as set forth.
\Vitness my hand this 15th day of February, 1890.
