VILLIAM H. COLLINS, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
HOOK AND EYE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N o. 711,826, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed May 28, 1902.` Serial No. 109,374. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment-fasteners; and its object is to provide a device of simple and compact construction, one member of which receives and is engaged by the remaining member and serves as a guard against the accidental disengagement of the parts.
A further object is to so construct the parts as to permit them to be readily detached from each other by the operator.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the members in engagement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of the members detached.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, lis a sheet-metal tube rectangular in cross-section and having its outer face 2 cut away at one end, as shown by 3, and forming side guards 3a. An inwardly-extending lug 4 is arranged at the center of said end 3, and an aperture 5 is formed at the opposite end of the tube. This aperture is adapted to receive threads or other securing means for fastening the tube to a garment.
The second member of the fastener comprises a single strip of spring metal bent into a V shape and forming a body 6 and an overlapping catch 7. A This catch is bent downward at its free end 8 and is provided adjacent thereto with an aperture 9. The body 6 is of greater length than the catch 7 and is provided at its free end with an aperture l0, whereby it may be secured to a garment.
To fasten the two members together, it is merely necessary to insert the body 6 into the tube 1. The catch 7 will be depressed by lug 4 until aperture 9 is engaged thereby, when the parts will be securely locked in position. When fastened together, the entire catch 7 and all of the body 6, with the exception of its perforated end,are contained within the tube l, and it is impossible to disengage the two members unless a finger or some other object is inserted between the sides 3 of the cut-away end 3 and pressed upon the end of the catch.
In the'foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a fastener, the combination of a tubular member having a cut-away face with a lug depending therefrom, and a second member comprising a body insertibleinto the tubular member and provided with a perforated spring-catch for engagement by the said lug, the catch having an end to lie between and be guarded by the ends of the tubular member.
2. A fastener comprising a tubular member having one end cut away on one face to form side guards and also having a lug depending from said end, and a V-shaped spring member insertible into the tubular member and having an aperture for engagement by the lug, the V-shaped spring member also having an end adjacent to the aperture therein adapted to project beyond the said face of the tubular member to rest between the guards of the latter.
3. In a fastener, a member comprising a tube cut away at one end of one face, side guards formed at said end, and a depending lug to said face.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` WILLIAM H. COLLINS.
