CLAMP FOR FASTENING SNAPS TO LEATHER LINES.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. Sronu, a citizen of the United States, residing in Dale township, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Fastening Snaps to Leather Lines; and I do declare the following the clamp-body. In the back of the clampbody A is a circular aperture D, somewhat "greater in diameter than the threaded aperture B and having a rounded edge e at the inner end thereof in the opening a.

The strap or line E, to which the snap]? is attached, is flat and of the same width as the larger diameter of the opening a and is equal in thickness when doubled to the lesser diameter of the opening a. The end f of the strap is pushed through the opening a, then passed through the eye g of the snap F. and then doubled against the body of the strap so as to form a loop G and is pushed through the opening (t. Then the clamp-screw O is 5 forced against the doubled strap, the rounded end 0 causing a bulge h of the strap in the aperture D, so that the strap bears frictionally against the rounded edge e, the two parts of the strap also having frictional resistance one 7 against the other part, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the end f of the strap, and consequently fastening the snap to the line or strap in a secure manner, but so as to be readily removed if found desirable.

Inpractical use the strap may deteriorate at the point of connection with the snap and break, and as the strap will not be injured by the clamp-screw,

invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to clamps which are designed especially for securing snaps, rings, or other devices to leather lines or straps; and it consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described wherebythe snaps or the like may be connected to the straps without requiring sewing or riveting and special implements therefor and permitting of ready renewals when required.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference-letters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the clamp attached to a strap or line, and thereby connecting a snap thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the clamp-body, showing the front thereof; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the body, showing the back thereof; and Fig. 4: is an enlarged longitudinal central sectional view of the clamp and the line to which a snap is attached.

In construction a clamp-body A is provided which is composed of suitable metal, and it is rectangular in plan, preferably oblong, and oblong in cross-section, the body having an opening a therethrough, so that it is hollow, the opening a being of proper dimensions in both directions to receive two thicknesses of a leather line or strap. In the front of the body is a threaded aperture B, extending to the opening a, and a clamp-screw C is fitted into the aperture B, the screw having a rounded inner end a and also having a slot cl in its outer end adapted to receive a screw-driver. C is equal in length approximately to the thickness of the front wall of theclamp-body A, so that when the screw is practically employed the outer end thereof will be flush with the outer face of but will be in good condition, particularly where covered and protected by the clamp-body, the oldsevered end f may be discarded and a new connection be made with the snap in the same manner as before, or should the snap be broken a new one manner above described.

It will be understood that all straps, lines, or reins connected with harness and the like may be provided with the clamp when it is required that metal trimmings having eyes or 9 openings are to be connected to the straps.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A clamp comprising a body having an opening therethrough and a threaded aperture 9 5 in one side thereof and having also a circular aperture in the opposite side thereof extending into the opening opposite to the threaded aperture, the circular aperture being greater in diameter than the threaded aperture, and I00 may readily be substituted therefor in the 5 o a clamp-screw in the threaded aperture and having a slot in' the outer end thereof, the outer end of the screw being in approximately the same plane as the outer side of the clampbody.

A leather line or strap looped and doubled upon itself and having a clamp-body extending about the doubled portions adjacent to the loop, the clamp-body having a thread-' ed aperture in one side thereof and a circular aperture in the opposite side thereof provided with a rounded edge at the inner end thereof, the circular aperture being greater in diameter than the threaded aperture, a metallic attachment connected to the loop, and a clampscreW'in the threaded aperture and having a slot in the outer end thereof, the outer end of the screw being in approximately the same plane as the outer side of the clamp-body.

3. The combination With a leather strap or line looped and doubled upon itself, of a clampbody having an opening therethrough that is rectangular and oblong in cross-section and containing the doubled portions of the strap or line adjacent to the loop, the clamp-body also having a threaded aperture in one side thereof and a circular aperture in the opposite side thereof extending into the opening in which the circular aperture has a rounded edge, and a clamp-screw in the threaded aperture and having a slot in the outer end thereof, said screw being adapted to form circular depressions in the doubled portions of the leather strap or line in said circular aperture.
