Application filed .Tune 28, 1913.
T0 all lwhom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I. REUnnN J. Turmnnxn, a citizen of the United States.y residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Holders. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rope holders or clamps and more particularly to a device which is especially adapted for securing the proximate ends of a clothes line or the like, being of such a construction as to withstand the strain exerted thereon, due to the pressure of clothes or like on the line, and at the same time insuring a positive clamp for the rope ends.
An object of this invention resides in the provision of a clamp which will not only insure a positive retaining means for the proximate ends of the rope, but will likewise be durable and inexpensive to manufacture. D
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings` Figure l is a plan view 0f my improved device illustrating the application thereof; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
ln the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention ay body portion 5 is provided which comprises a relatively small and fiat device which may be stamped or otherwise formed from a. sheet of metal, and has formed in the one end thereof an aperture fl and in spaced relation thereto. approximately midway the ends thereof a second aperture T. On each side of the aperture T is formed a. V-shaped recess S. providing a tapering finger Sa so as to facilitate the entrance of a cable into the recess 8, and on the end thereof opposite to that in which the opening 6` is provided is a V-shaped recess 9.
On application to Fig. l of the drawings it will be seen that the edges of each of the openings f5 and T and the recesses 8 and 9 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1.9M.
serial No. 776,399.
are beaded as indicated at 10, so as to eliminate the cutting strain on the rope, which i is sometimes secured to the device for a length of time, in which instances the rope has heretofore very often been cut, due to the knife-like edges of the recesses in which it was secured and causing the same to be prematurely discarded.
In operation the one end 11 of the cable which may be a clothes line or rope of any kind, is secured in the opening 6. The cable ll'r1 is then passed over hooks or the like, on the supporting posts and the opposite end of the rope passes through the opening 7 thence over the V-shaped recess 9 into the end of the recess 8 and the extreme end in the opposite recess 8. By this peculiar manner of securing the rope, it is evident that the same will be positively held from movement and at the same time may be readily released when it is so desired.
It will be understood that. the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction. proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made. within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention', what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A rope holder including an elongated plate provided with a tapering recess in one end and an opening in the opposite end, said plate having an opening between the apex of said recess and said first mentioned opening. one end of the rope being secured in the rst mentioned opening and the opposite end trained through the second opening and said recess, the lateral margins of said plate being recessed to receive the free end of the rope, the apices of all of said recesses being rounded to prevent mutilation of the rope.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN J. WHITEHEAD.
Witnesses FRANK J. CRIST, DAVID Davis.
