Be it known that I, PIERRE A. RoUssEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raceland, in the parish of Lafourche and State of Louisiana, haye invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packet- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in packet holders and it consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be used repeatedly upon packages or bundles of various kinds and sizes and which will be inexpensive in construction and convenient to operate.

The above and other objects are attained in the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the use of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holding plate; Fig. 4 is a side or edge view of the same and Fig. 5 is an end view.

My improved packet holder comprises a flexible binding element 1 preferably in the form of a piece of cord and a uniting or holding member 2 in the form of a plate. The latter is preferably of the shape shown in the drawings and has one end of its flat body reduced and formed with a substantially V-shaped projecting portion 3. which is bent upwardly at a slight angle from the plane of the body. Rising from the outwardly converging edges of the portion or end 3 of the plate are upstanding flanges 4 which also converge in a forward or outward direction and have their outer ends or edges 5 spaced a short distance apart to receive the cord 1 between them. The space between the edges 5 is such as to permit of the free passage of the cord, but is too small to permit of the passage of enlargements 6 which are provided or formed at suitable intervals on the cord adjacent to its free or outer end. Said enlargements are preferably formed by making knots in the cord, as shown in the drawings, but they may be in the form of metal buttons or other devices which will serve the same purpose. It will be noted that the flanges or lips 4 form a wedge shaped pocket or holder for the slipping out of the same.

knots or enlargements 6, and that the portion 3 of the plate is bent upwardly at an angle so as to lessen the liability of the knot In order to further lessen the liability of the knot and cord slipping out of the wedge shaped pocket, I preferably give the flanges 4 a slightly inward and upward inclination, as will be noted upon reference to Fig. 5. At the opposite or large end of the body or plate 2 is provided in one corner a hook or overhanging projection 7 and in the other corner an aperture 8. The hook 7 is preferably stamped out from the plate and projects inwardly toward the center of the same. Its inner or under face is preferably made convex by curving its body portion, so as to lessen the liability of the cord being cut or worn where it is engaged with said hook. One end of the cord is passed through the aperture 8 and tied in a knot to unite it to said plate but any other suitable means may be provided for attaching the inner end of the cord to the plate. If desired I may provide the plate with another aperture 9 of such size as to readily receive the head of a nail or the like upon which the device may be suspended from the wall or other support when it is not being used. The use of my improved packet holder will be readily seen upon reference to Fig. 1. In ap lying it to the packet, the plate 2 is place upon the center of one side of .the same and the cord 1 is wrapped one or more times around the packet in one direction and then caught under the hook 7 and wound one or more times around the packet in the opposite direction. The cord is then drawn tight and forced downwardly into the space between the edges 5 of the flanges or jaws 4 and released so that one of the knots or enlargements 7 will be caught and held between said jaws or flanges as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By providing the wedge shape holder at one end of the plate and a plurality of the knots or enlargements adjacent to the free end of the cord or flexible element 1, it will be seen that the device may be used upon packets of various kinds and sizes and that the cord may be drawn as tight as desirable to efiectively bind the packet or bundle. It will also be noted that owing to the shape and arrangement of the jaws or flanges 4 and to the inclination of the portion or end 3 of the plate, there will be little or no danger of the knot slipping out from between said flanges or aws and at the same time the cord and knots may be quickly and easily engaged with and disengaged from the same. Owing to the shape of the hook 7 and t the edges of the jaws or flanges 4, there will be little or no wear upon the cord and the device may therefore be used many times without the necessity of renewing the cord. Owing to the simple construction of the holder member or plate 2, the latter may be produced at a very small expense.

Having thus described invention what I claim is:

A packet holder comprising a flexible element provided with enlargements arranged at intervals upon the same and a r g body plate attached to said element and provided with converging flanges having their outer or converging ends spaced apart, said flanges being bent up from the opposite edges of the body plate and being inclined upwardly and inwardly toward each other, substantially as and for the pur ose set forth.

3. A packet holder comprising a flexible element provided with enlargements arranged at intervals upon the same, and a body plate attached to said element and having a V-shaped portion bent upwardly out of the plane of the remainder of the same, said V-shaped portion being provided at its edges with upstanding flanges having their outer ends spaced apart, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A packet holder comprising a plate, formed with an aperture, an inwardly projecting hook stamped out from said plate and a V-shapedreduced end bent u Wardly out of the plane of said plate, said enc having its converging edges bent up to provide converging flanges or jaws having spaced outer ends, and a cord secured in the aperture in said plate and formed adjacent to its free end with a series of knots, substantially as I described.
