SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,288, dated December 30, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Improvement in Leather-Stretching Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The objects of this invention are to facilitate the work of stretching leather, particuleather-stretching device and in the arrangeof the clutching-jaws.

The jaw 19 comprises a flat plate having a' being turned upward and rearward, as :shown in Fig. 6, to permit the serrated edge e to enter the recess 'mbcneath, as hereinafter more particularly described. Back from the up and back wardly turned edge and parallel therewith are upturned edges 70, separate from one another, but in line one with the other, spaces at being formed between the serrated upturned edge j and the edges 70, into which the opposite ends Z of the flat jaw 19 may lie loosely, except when the leather is in clutched relation to the jaws. Between the separated hearings or upturned parts 70 7c the plate or jaw c is slotted or perforated at o to receive the pin or tooth q; and perforated at p to receive the cord or connection d.

In operating the invention or employing it in effective service the leather a near its edge is laid over the jaw or plate 0 and the plate I) at its serrated edge e is pressed against the upperside of said leather, so that the latter is forced down beneath the upwardly and backwardly turned portion j into the recess m and spaces n. The rear part of the plate or jaw 19 is then pressed down toward the plate 0, the tooth i piercing the leather and entering the slot Z. The cord or connection (1 is looped through the eyes h p, so that when tension is brought thereon the rear ends of the said jaws or plates will be held together,

the forward serrated edges being similarly held together by the backward turn or bend of the edge j. The pressure of the jaws together tends to sharply bend the leather over the serrated edges of said jaws, so that said leather is held with great security.

The upturned hearings in serve to prevent the withdrawal of the edge e from the recess m. The piercing of the leather by the pin or tooth t'adds security to the fastening, and the perforation of the leather is brought very near to the edge thereof, which is ordinarily wastevmaterial, and so the value is not reduced, as would often be the case if the piercing were nearer the'center of said leather.

Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new is 1. The improved clutching device for stretching leather, comprising jaws b, 0, one of which consists of a plate having a serrated edge and an open eye, and the other of which has an upwardly and backwardly turned edge, upwardly-turned bearings, and having an eye p, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as set forth.

2. The improved clutching device for stretching leather, comprising jaws Z), 0, one of which has an upwardly and backwardly turned straight edge and back from and parallel with said straight edge has separated upturned bearings and an eye, and the other of said jaws having a straight edge adapted to enter beneath the upwardly and backwardly turned straight edge, the last said jaw being adapted to engage the separated back bearings and enter between the same and having an eye and a cord or connection adapted to enter said eyes and hold the rear parts of the jaws toward one another, substantially as set forth.

3. The improved clutching device for stretching leather, comprising jaws b, 0, one of said jaws-having an upwardly and backwardly turned and serrated edge and back from said edge having separated bearings forming defined spaces n, a, said jaw being perforated to receive a pin or tooth and the other of said jaws having a serrated edge adapted to enter the recess formed beneath the backwardly-turned edge of the first said jaw, and adapted to enter the spaces formed between the upwardly and backwardly turned edge and the said separated bearings, and having a pin or tooth, and a cord or connection connecting the two said jaws, substantially as set forth.
