CLAMP FOR BUTTON-HOLE SEWING-MACHINES.

. ject to provide a clamp of such construction thata pressure is initially and constantly exerted throughout thecen ter of the upper or clamping plate proper; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter full y and in detail set forth in the specification, and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled may more fully understand the construction and operation of Inyimproved clamp, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a view in perspective of my iniproved clamp, with the side of the post broken away, showing the arrangement and relative position of the coil-spring, tongue, pin, and lever; and Fig. 2, a detail view of the upper or clamping plate.

As seen at Fig. 2, the upper or clamping plate, A, is cut out at the center, leaving a central opening, B, and tongue C, and at the rear end of said plate are projections or lugs a c, all of which will be presently explained.

D is the hollow post, secured to the lower portion, E, of the clamp proper, and provided with an elongated vertical slot or opening, F.

In assembling the parts of my improved clamp, I rst place a coil-spring, G, within the hollow post D. I then place the upper or clamping plate,A,over said post in such manparts in both gner that the projections or lugs ca adaptthe1nselves to slots b b in the ears c c, which latter are formed on a plate, H, fastened to the lower plate of the clamp, while at the Sametime the tongue C is inserted within the elongated opening or slot F and over and upon the coilspring G. A pin, I, is then placed within the post, so as to rest upon the tongue C. The

cam-lever J is then pivoter] at the upper portion ot' said post, all ot which will be readily understood by reference to Fig. l.

The operation is as f'ollows: The fabric isinserted between the two plates A and E, and the cam-lever J depressed. The cam of the lever, coming into immediate contactwith the pin I, causes the latter to actimmediately upon the tongue C, thereby depressing the upper or clamping plate, A, with a force which is exerted centrally throughout said plate. When the cam-lever is raised the elasticity of the coilsprin g GrV causes the plate A to liyl up and release the fabric. It is immaterial how this plate A is fastened at the rear end, and I do not wish to confine myself to the exactmethod shown and described hereiubefore, since the lugs a a and slots b b may be dispensed with andthe plate hinged, pivoted, or fastened in any suitable way at its rear end without de parting from the spirit ot' my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a clamp for sewing -or other similar machines, the upper or clamping plate, A, having central opening, B, and tongue C, in combination with the coil-spring G and pin I, arranged within the hollow post D and cam-lever J, pivoted at the upper end of said post, as and for the purpose set forth.
