VUNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. HOOVER, or NORWAY, IOWA.
STRAP SPLICE OR CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,945, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed March 16, 1882. (Modcl.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. HOOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norway, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have :invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap Splice or Clasp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to -means for splicing or looping harness-straps; andthe object of the improvement is to provide a strapsplice which may be applied in any case where a strap breaks, or which may be used for all purposes wherea sewed, riveted, or cemented splice is used about harness or in forming a loop in the harness.
Illy invention therefore consists ina metallic plate of suitable width and length, and provided with an ,elongated button-slot in one end and a button or lockiugstudiu the other, as hereinafter set forth.
My invention further consists in a metallic casing, of suitable length and hreadth, formed or provided with an elongated button-slot in one end, and a button-stud in the other, in combination with a metallic cover litting the walls ot' the casing and formed or provided with an elongated button-slot in one end and abutton-stud in the other, as hereinafter set forth. t
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my improvements` on a looped strap. Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing the same applied to spliced straps. Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsectional view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the casing and cap-plate.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A rep-` resentsa metallic casing, which is struck up or cast of any desired dimensions, and there in formed the elongated button-slot a in one endthereot, and in theother end ixed by riveting or other means in the button or locking stud b. This buttonstud b projects sufficiently above the line of the walls of the casing to receive the clasping-plate below the flange of the button, and the neck is choked, or formed with an annular groove ttin g the elongation of the slot beyond the eye which receives the button.
The letter B represents thetop plate or cover, also formed with an elongated slot, c, and pro' vided with a stud, d, similar in all respects to that formed and fixed in the casing. This slot c and stud d of the cover register respectively with the stud b and slot a of the casing, so that when the parts are united theytare held together by the necks or shouldered portions ot' the buttons slipping in the elongated portions of th@` slots and securing theV pieces together.
To apply my improved splice to a strap, a hole is cut in the strap for the insertion of the stud Vof the casing, and at the proper distance from the hole an elongated slot is made, cor responding as near as may be with the elongated slot in the casing. The end of the piece to be spliced on is then prepared in the same way to receive the stud ot' the cover or clamp, except that the order of perforations is reversed. The ends of the straps are then xed in the casing with the stud through them, and the stud of the cap or cover is then put through the unoccupied holes, the stud of the casing through the slot in the cap, and the cap then forced under the button, which also forces the button on the casing side into the elongation ot' theV slot, and thus the splice is complete, and the parts securely and strongly held together. The mode of forming aloop in a strap is somewhat similar, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
`I reserve the r1 ght to vary the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a means for splicing harness or similar straps, a metallic plate formed with a 1ongitudiual elongated button-slot in one end and a fixed button or locking stud inthe other end adapted to co-operate with a similarlyconstructed plate, substantially as set forth.
2. A metallic casing, A, formed with side walls and provided with an elongated buttonslot in one end and a button-stud in the other end, in combination with a metallic plate, B, serving as a clasping means, formed with a longitudinal elongated button-slot in one end and a fixed button-stud in the other end, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM L. HOOVER.
