Description

PATENTED APR. 9, 1907.
APPLICATION TILED APB-.16. 1906.
INVENTOR WITNESSES:
TTORNEY V rlwcrou a c JOSEPH VAN OLEVE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BUCKLE ATTACHMENT FOR STRAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed April 16, 1906. Serial No. 311,919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn VAN CLEVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle Attachments for Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
As now constructed when a strap with its buckle is attached in extension to another strap the buckle is held by a loop, and the av tension-strap is placed underneath the main strap and then the whole structure is riveted together, which makes four thicknesses of leather.
In my present construction I wish to secure a buckle and an extension-strap to the end of a main strap without the use of a rivet. The present structure can be used on trunk-straps or harness, baby-carriage straps, and it also can be used for attachment to a staple.
The invention is illustrated in Figure 1, in which I show my extension-strap disengaged from the main portion of the strap, and in Fig. 2 is shown the whole structure complete, but not pulled taut, so that the method of attaching could be seen.
The main strap 10 is provided with transverse slot 11, and the strap 12 is adapted to slide through it. The other end of the strap 12 has a tab 13, that is provided with a transverse slot 14. The strap 12 is applied to the strap 10 by running the free end down through the slot 11 and then up through the slot 14 in itself to make it tight. To secure a buckle for the strap 12, the buckle 15 is first equipped with the strap 12 by having the strap run through it and then having the tongue 16 of the buckle emerge through the longitudinal slot 17 of the strap 12. It will thus be seen from Fig. 2 that the buckle is securely held, as its cross-bar will be caught between the end of the main strap 10 and that portion of the strap 12 lying on either side of the slot 17. This fixture dispenses with any rivets, and the strap 12 secures itself to the strap 10 and also fastens the buckle 15 in place. The strap 12 is supplied with the usual holes 18 to engage the tongue 16 of the buckle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the kind described, a strap having a tab at one end, said tab being provided with a transverse slot, said strap also being provided with a longitudinal slot adjacent to the tab, and a buckle embracing the strap and having its tongue projecting through the longitudinal slot.
2. A combination of the main strap having a slot therein, a second strap to enter the slot in the first strap and provided with a transverse slot at one end to receive the free end of the second strap, a longitudinal slot near the transverse slot, and a buckle embracing the second strap and having its tongue projecting through the longitudinal slot.
3. The combination with the main strap having a slot therein, of a second strap provided with a transverse slot in one end, the second strap also having a longitudinal slot near the transverse slot, a buckle arranged on the strap and having its tongue projecting through the longitudinal slot, the free end of the second strap being passed through the slot in the main strap and then through the transverse slot in itself, and having perforations to receive the tongue of the buckle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1906.
JOSEPH VAN-OLEVE. Vitnesses:
E. A. PELL, WM. H. OAMFIELD.
