SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,689, dated February 28, 1888 Application filed August 25, 1887. Serial No. 247,816. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVoodstown, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Trace Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to furnish an improvement in clips for attaching the back and belly bands of a set of harness to the traces, which will allow the rear part of the trace to play freely up and down, thus taking a great deal of the strain off the back-band and preventing the horses back from becoming sore, and which will at the same time enable a great saving of leather to be made in making the traces.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of part of a set of harness embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of my improved clip; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the breeching-loop; and Fig. 4, a plan of part of the trace, showing the method of attaching my improved clip and breeching-loop.

The trace is made in two pieces, A A. The forward end of the piece A is attached in the usual manner to the hames, while its rear end is attached to the clip B as follows: The clip B is furnished with a tongue, 0, and the end of the traceA is split and the tongue (3 is placed in this split, and the trace and tongue are secured by means of rivets D or in any other convenient manner. Heretofore it has been usual to have a simple D-clip and to se cure the trace to it by passing it through the clip, and then bending the end back and either riveting or sewing it to the trace. It will be seen that this method of attachment requires the use of a trace several inches longer than is required in my method.

The rear end of the clip 13 is furnished with an eye, E, and the part A of the trace is furnished with a hook, F, which is held by the eye E. This hook and eye make a flexible joint in the trace A A, and the part A of the trace can play up and down when a heavy load is being drawn, which prevents a great deal of the strain on the back-band G. The back-band G and the belly-band G are attached to the clip B in the usual manner.

The breeching-loop H, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, to which the breech-bandis attached, may either be placed directly over the tongue 0 of clip B and secured by the same rivets, D, or it may be placed upon the piece A, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, I claim The divided trace A A, provided with the hook F and with the clip having a tongue for insertion in the trace and an eye for engagement with the hook, all substantially as set forth.
