Description

MELANOTHON E.- ZELLER, OF GILBOA,OHIO.
OVERDRAW CHECK-LOOP FOR BRIDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Application filed October 23, 1907. Serial N 0. 398,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELANOTHON E. ZEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilboa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overdraw Check- Loops for Bridles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to harness bridles, and particularly to overdraw check loops which are carried by the crown strap.
It has for its objects to simplify the construction of these loops and their connection to the crown strap, to render the connection of the overdraw check rein with said loops more easy and to strengthen the central por tion of said crown strap.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts here inafter described and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the middle part of a crown strap carrying a pair of my improved loops, and a portion of the overdraw check rein engaged with said loops. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the crown strap showing the loops in elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of one of said loops. Fig. 3 is an under plan view of one of said loops drawn to the same scale as that illustrated in Fig. 3, and Fig. 4 shows the crown strap bowed to permit the insertion of the overdraw check rein into the loop.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the crown strap of a bridle. To the upper face of said strap and at the middle thereof is secured, preferably by stitching, a strip of leather 2, which together with said crown strap constitutes the crown piece. Said strip is provided with perforations 3 at equal distances from the center thereof as shown and through each perforation extends the shank of one of the overdraw check loops 4. Each. of said loops comprises an integral metal piece formed with a plate portion 5, a shank portion 6 extending substantially at right angles to said plate, and a bent hookshaped portion 7 constituting the loop proper. The plate portion 5 is arranged between the crown strap land the superimposed strip 2 and is bent or curved, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to conform to the curvature of said crown strap. Said plate portions of said loops also, serve to strengthen the central portion of the crown piece. The shank portion 6 of each loop extends through one of the perforations 3 in said strip 2, while the hoo -shaped portion 7 curves above said strip and down with its end in contact therewith forming the loop through which the overdraw check rein '8 is passed.
It will be noted that the plate portion of each loop is extended on the side of the shank away from the hooked portion to strengthen the crown strap but that said plate extends only a short distance on the other side of said shank or below said hooked portion. The purpose of this is to permit the crown strap to be bowed, as illustrated in Fig. 4, to permit the check rein to be inserted into the loop below the end of said hooked portion. This form of loop adapted to have the check rein inserted as shown and described is particularly applicable when the check rein is made of an integral split strap as shown. Such form of check rein could not be inserted in the ordinary loop which has both ends fastened to the crown strap.
I claim:
1. The combination, with the crown strap of a bridle, of a strip of leather fastened to the outer face of said strap and having a perforation therein, an overdraw check loop comprising a plate portion arranged between said crown strap and strip, a shank portion extending through the perforation in said strip, and a hooked portion bent down at its free end and normally resting upon said crown piece, said plate portion of said loop extending from said shank on the side away from said hook far enough to hold the loop in proper position without any direct connection between said plate portion and said strip or strap.
. 2. The combination, with the crown strap of a bridle, of a strip of leather, fastened to the outer face of said strap and having a perforation therein, an overdraw check loop comprising a plate portion arranged between said crown strap and strip, a shank portion extending through the perforation in said strip, and a hooked portion bent down at its free end and normally resting upon said crown piece, said plate portion of said loop in testimony whereof, I afiiX my signa-- extending partially below the hooked porture, in presence of two witnesses.- tion thereof and on the side away from said hook far enough to hold the loop in proper MELANCTHON ZELLER' 5 position without any direct connection be- Witnesses:
tween said plate portion and said strip or ELIZA STATELER,
strap. J. D. RHODES.
