MOP-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 396,330, dated January 15, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ooshocton, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful impro vem ents in mop-holders and the invention consists in the improved construction, all as more fully described, claimed, and shown in the drawings, in which ends of the cross-bar B of the mop-head and in the guide-bearings F, formed on the outer ends of the cross-head.

G are clamping-levers pivotally secured at their inner ends to the mop-h ead and provided at their outer ends with the grooved abutme'nts H, by means of which they may be en gaged upon the inner edges of the arms E, as shown.

In practice, the parts being constructed and arranged as shown and described, they are intended to operate as follows: If the clampinglevers G are disengaged from the arms E by throwing them back against the handle, the clamping-bar D can be freely moved from or toward'the cross-bar to form a suitably large opening, into which the mop-cloth may be engaged. Then by clamping the clamping-bar against the cross-head and throwing the levers G into engagement with the arms E the cloth is firmly locked in position to hold it from any displacement in use.

It is obvious that by arranging the clamping-levers G to operate at a nominal incline great force may be obtained to lock the arms E in fixed position, which, by the locking action, are naturally slightly sprung. To prevent breakage under this action, I make the device preferably of malleable iron or other suitable material.

In Fig. 2 I show amodification of the clampinglever G, which is there merely represented by the springI operating in a similar manner as the clamping-lever, but fixedly secured at the inner ends to the mop-head. NVith this construction I preferably provide the mophead with the cam J, which is actuated by the crank-handle K to throw the spring out of its locked position, and, if desired, the same device may be applied to the construction shown in Fig. 1.

Another means of locking the sliding part of the mop-head is shown in Fig. 3, where it is accomplished by means of the spring-latch laterally slidingly secured in a recess in the cross-bar of the mop-head and adapted to engage in serrations upon the inner edges of v the arms E. If desired, similar serrations may be used in connection with the other constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

WVhat I claim as my invention is In a mop-holder,the combination, with the fixed part of the mop-head, consisting of the cross-bar B, slotted upon its outer ends and provided with the guide-bearings F, of the sliding part of the mop-head, consisting of the cross-bar D, provided with the arms E, projecting at right angles therefrom and slidingly engaging With the fixed part of the mophead, and a locking device, as the clampinging-levers G, adapted to engage with the arms E, substantially as described.
