NITED STATES DAVID O. BUROIIFIELD, OF ASHLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,211, dated July 6, 1886.
Y Application filed October 22, 1885. Serial No. 180,664. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID C. BURCHFIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ashland, in4 the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates `to certain new and useful' improvements in devices for stretching carpets, the object of the same being to provide an implement by means of which the carpet may be stretched and held in place while being tacked; and to this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of the part-s, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying` drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a plan View; Fig. 3, a sectional View taken on the line x x of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is'a longitudinal section taken on line zz of Fig. 2.
A, in the accompanying drawings, represents the base-piece, which is provided on its under side with downwardly-projecting pins a a, which are adapted to pass into the floor, so as to hold the base-piece A rigid. The upper side of the base-piece A is provided longitudinally with beveled side pieces, b and b', the side piece b having ratchet-teeth, as shown, and the beveled side pieces are provided near their ends with upwardly-projecting ears B B, which are perforated for the reception of the shaft C of the lever D, which is provided with teeth d.
E represents the sliding section, which is adapted to be moved longitudinally between the side pieces, b and b', and this sliding section E has attached thereto a pawl, c, which is adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth, and prevent said movable sections sliding back when the carpet is stretched. The pawl e, hereinbefore referred to,has formed thereon an upwardly-projecting thumb-piece, so that it can be easily thrown out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth.
One end ofthe sliding section Eis provided centrally with cog; teeth f, with which the teeth d onthe curved end of the lever engage, so that when said lever is moved the sliding section E will also be moved in the direction opposite to the movement of the handle of the lever.
The forward end of the sliding section is provided with a series of transverse serrations, `f/,and a block, g,with which the lower portion of the pivoted clamp G is adapted to engage. This clamp Gis pivotally attached to the support H, which isbifurcated at its end and provided with adownwardlyextending member, h, which is rigidly attached to the base of the sliding section E. The end of the carpet to be stretched is placed under the pivoted catch G,the sliding section being pushed as far as possible within the base-piece A. IVhen the lever is moved rearwardly, the carpet will be firmly secured between these serrations g and the pivoted clamp G, which will hold the same while the sections are being separated. When the sections are separated, they can be held apart by the pawl, which engages with the ratchet-teeth and the basejplate.
I am aware of the constructions disclosed in the United States Patents of Vanorman, No. 137,739, April 8, 1873,' and ONeill, No. 150,780, May 12,1874; and I do not claim, broadly, any feature set forth in either of said patents.
I claim- In a carpet-stretcher, substantially as described, the base-piece A, provided with upwardly-projecting side pieces, B B, between which is pivoted a lever having teeth d, a sliding section adapted to be moved longitudinally uponthe base A, said section having a series of teeth, f, at one end, and at its opposite end a series of transverse serrations, and a pivoted catch, G, supported by a frame and raised edge, b, and atoothed edge, b', and pawl e, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID O. BUROHFIELD.
