WITED %TATE% PATENT UFFICE.
JOHN E. KNOWLES, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
PAGE OR STUIB CLAMP.
Application filed April 18, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. KNowLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Page or Stub Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a device which is adapted to hold the stubs or pages of a book so that the book can be easily opened at the desired place. Such a device is particularly although not exclusively useful upon account books, journals and check books.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig. 3 is a perspective of an account book showing my device applied thereto.
In constructing my clamp it is stamped or formed from a single piece of material although it can be made in such manner as may be most convenient and inexpensive and which will be familiar to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
A represents the body of the device which is formed with a lower side 2 and a pair of upper lips 3 forming a side lying parallel with said side 2 and connected thereto by a web t thus forming a channel which is adapted to fit over an edge of the back cover of the book. The lips 3 are provided with thumb-set screws 5 threaded downwardly therethrough and terminating in sharp points which are adapted to impinge upon the inside of the back cover to hold the clamp firmly in place. Projecting upwardly from the web between the lips is a projection 6 which is bent at substantially right angles to the web forming an arm 7 of greater length than the lips and side 2 lying in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of said side 2. This arm is adapted to eX- tend over the pages of the book as illustrated in Fig. 3 and its end is provided with a downwardly extending set screw 8. This screw is threaded through the arm and formed with a flat point which is adapted to impinge upon the pages to hold the leaves in position against the back cover of the book.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22,1913.
Serial No. 691,727.
In use the body is slipped over the back cover 9 of the book as illustrated in Fig. 3 with the outer edge of the cover resting against the web 4: between the side 2 and lips 3. The set screws 5 are then set firmly into the cover. The leaves 10 which it is desired to hold in place are then slipped between the lips 3 and arm 7, and the set screw 8 is set down firmly upon the leaves to prevent them from opening away from the back cover. To release the leaves loosen setscrew 8.
The screws 5 assume a position beyond the edges of the leaves when the clamp is in use and the device is not bulky but flat and thin and occupies very small space not bulging the book when the latter is closed.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A stub or page clamp, consisting of a rigid channel shaped member adapted to fit over the edge of the cover of a book, adjustable fastening means on one side of said member adapted to impinge against said cover to secure said clamp thereon, said member being provided with a rigid arm projecting up and offset to lie parallel with the sides of said channel member and eX- tend over the leaves of the book, and adjustable means on the outer end of said arm adapted to impinge against the leaves of said book to hold the same against said cover.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
