Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. HILL, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of Bridgeport, ,Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to buckles, but more particularly to rustless back buckles, and the objects of the invention. are to improve upon the construction of such devices, and provide means for securely clamping one length, as the running length of a webbing, against another portion of the webbing utilized as a resistant member, without clamping the webbing against the back or frame of the buckle, so that dependence is not placed upon the back or frame for the clamping effect.
Another object of the invention is to enable the webbing to be securely clamped without tearing the same.
To these ends the invention consists of a buckle embodying the features of construction, and combinations of elements as shown in one of its preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the buckle and webbing with the buckle open; Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the buckle closed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lever; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the back sections; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, showing the buckle open; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of Fig. 2, showing the buckle closed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable lever provided with a clamping edge which may be in the form of the teeth B, turned outwardly at an angle to the body portion of the lever. The back or frame of the buckle is so constructed that an open space or portion is provided lying opposite the clamping edge or teeth B of the lever.
In this instance the back or frame is shown comprising the independent sections C suitably pivoted at each end of the lever A. In this instance the sections C of the back comprise sheet metal members bent into U- shaped form, one leg D of which forms the pivot, while the other leg is doubled upon itself, forming the members a and b, one of acting as cured to the back sections C and spans the space between said sections;
In the construction shown, the end F of the webbing is folded upon itself and clamped between the members 06-6 of each back section C. The top portion F or top edge of the webbing thus forms a bridge or resistant member against which the running length G of the webbing is clamped by the lever A. The running length is threaded be tween the top edge F of the webbing and the clamping edge'B of lever A. The clamping edge B of lever A is located between the back sections C and wholly within the space between the inner ends of said sections, so
that when the lever is pressed into clamping I position, as shown in Fig. 6, the teeth clamp the running length G of the webbing against the top edge or resistant portion F, without clamping the webbing against the top edges of the back sections G. The back sections in accordance with this invention havethe function of holding the webbing Without forming a portion of the clamping devices. There is sufficient resistance and at the same time resiliency in the top edge F of the Webbing to form a resist-ant member against which the running length G may be pressed by the clamping edge of the lever A.
The webbing is not so liable to be torn by the buckle and a firmer hold is obtained than in former constructions. Less metal is required in the parts and the buckle is simpler to manufacture.
It is to be understood that one suitable means for securing the Webbing to the back sections is shown by way of illustration. Difi'erent forms of backs or frames may be provided without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. Teeth c on member I) of sections C may of course be omitted leaving 6 as a plane surface only or b may be pierced to provide inwardly projecting prongs in the well known manner, the particular clamping means shown not being essential.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
1. A buckle comprising a lever having a clamping edge, and a back or frame comprising two sections spaced apart from each other and separately pivoted to the lever, said clamping edge being of less length than the space between said sections and adapted to clamp the webbing between said separated sections.
2. A buckle comprising a lever having a clamping edge, and independent separated clamping ears adapted to clamp the fixed end of the webbing, said ears being spaced apart from each other and separately pivoted to the lever, the clamping edge of the lever being of less length than the space between the ears and adapted to clamp the web bing between said ears.
3. A buckle comprising a lever having a clamping edge, and a back or frame formed in independent separated sections separately pivoted to said lever, the clamping edge of the lever lying wholly between the innermost points of said back sections.
4:. The combination of a buckle comprising a lever having a clamping edge, and independent back sections pivotally connected to the lever at each side and leaving a space between said sections greater than the length of said clamping edge, and a web bing secured to the back sections and spanning the space between said sections, the running length of the webbing being threaded between said span of webbing and the lever, whereby the clamping edge of .the lever clamps the run-ning length against said span between the back sections as a resistant member.
5. The combination of a buckle comprising a lever having a clamping edge and a sectional back or frame, the parts of said back or frame being spaced from each other and separately connected to said lever, and a webbing having one end secured to said back and spanning said spaced portion the running length of the webbing being threaded between said span and the lever, whereby the lever clamps said running length against said span as a resistant member.
