UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. MOORE AND GEORGE T. MOORE, OF RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
B OOK-MARK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed April 7, 1908. Serial N 0 425,592.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN T. MOORE and GEORGE T. MOORE, citizens of the United States, and residing at Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new' and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the fol owing is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to book marks, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with the free edge of one side of a book back or cover and to hold any number of leaves of a book in an open position when the book is open, and also to mark any leaf or page when the book is closed and hold the same so that the book may be opened at a predetermined point; a further object being to provide a'device of the class described which may be used for the same purpose on a check book or record book of any kind or class.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved book mark, and ;-Fig. 2 an end view of an open book showing our book mark applied or in use.
In the practice of our invention as shown in the drawing we provide a book mark of the class described which is composed of spring wire, one end portion of which is bent to form a bottom clamping aw a which is preferably triangular in form and composed of an end member a and two side members a and a.
In practice, one end portion of the wire is first bent to form the part a and then the part a and said end portion of the wire is then wrapped around the part a at a and bent to form a top clamping jaw a which rangesin the same direction with and over the jaw a, and which is preferably longer than the jaw a and also preferably provided at its end with a ring or loop of. The side or part a of the clamping jaw a extends beyond the point a to form a shank b and is formed into a spring coil 0 and then bent in the same direction as the part a to form a spring arm (1 which is longer than the part a and also preferably provided at its end with a ring or loop (1 We have also shown at e a book, and in practice one side e of the back or cover, or the free edge thereof is inserted between the jaws a and af of the book mark, and said book mark is thus held securely attached to said side or back of the book cover, in which position thereof the spring arm (1 extends Over and transversely of said side 6 of the back or cover of the book, and in practice the leaves 6 of the book may be securely passed under the end of the spring arm a which bears on said leaves and securely holds them in the position shown in Fig. 2.
This device, as will be understood, may be applied to or used in connection with any kind or class of books, and when in use will aid in holding a book open and holding it open at any desired point, and when the book is closed it will still serve as a book mark and enable the book to be opened at any desired point.
Our invention is not limited to the formation of our improved book mark in the manner herein described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the class described composed of spring wire bent centrally to form a loop 0, one part of said wire being bent to form a triangular aw a having a spring arm a connected therewith adjacent to the loop 0, and the other part of said wire being bent to form the spring arm d.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 6th day of April 1908.
