(Application filed May 23, 1899.)
(No Model.)
L ALLA- 4 naw/whom 7 MA. 5771 1271 WILLIAM A. SMITH, O F OOSHOCTON,
OHIO.
HOLDER FOR NEWSPAPERS, 8M).
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 632,155, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed May 23, 1899. Serial No. 717,942.
To all 1072,0771, it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM A. SM1TH,aeitizen of the United States, residingat Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Newspapers and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a combined advertising device and holder or clip for daily papers, periodicals, and the like.
The device consists of a base, preferably of wood, although any material that can be advantageously used may be employed, and a spring-clamp constructed of a single length of spring-wire bent into the form of an archshaped or D frame, the terminals being brought together centrally of the straight side and bent outwardly from and in the plane of the frame, fastenings being employed to secure the straight side of the frame to the base medially and terminally, the middle fastening likewise serving to hold the offstanding terminals of the wire together and to the base.
The invention will be more fully set forth hereinafter, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the device, and Fig. 2 an edge view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The base 1 is oblong and is provided at its upper end with an opening 2 to receive a nail or like projection, from which the device is suspended and is preferably formed of wood, although any material suitable for the purpose may be employed.
The spring-clamp 8 is formed 'of a single length of spring-wire bent about as shown, forming anapproximately D-shaped frame, the terminal portions of the wire coming together centrally of the straight side and bent outwardly upon slightly-divergent lines, as shown at 4. The opposite members 5 of the (No model.)
straight side incline slightly in opposite directions, thereby giving better results. The free end of the clamp-frame is rounded and is deflected slightly to leave a space for the ready insertion of papers, pamphlets, and the like between it and the base. The parts of the frame, including the offstanding arms 4, are approximately in the same plane and bear against the front side of the base. Staples 6 are driven into the base over the end portions of the members 5, and a single staple 7 secures the arms 4 together and to the base, and these staples are out of line, the staple 7 being'at right angles to the plane of the staples 6. By having the arms at divergent they are prevented from slipping through the staple '7. The staples 6 loosely embrace the outer ends of the members, thereby permitting them to act torsionally in returning the clamp-frame to a normal position. The upper portion of the base extends above the frame 3 and serves to direct the papers, into the space between it and the said frame and is adapted to have advertising matter imprinted thereon or otherwise applied.
The deviee is exceedingly simple, and the parts can be quickly assembled and are not liable to derangement.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device substantially as specified for the purposes described consisting of a base, a spring-clamp formed of a single wire bent into the shape of a frame and having its terminal portions brought together centrally of the divided side and bent outwardly away from and in the plane of the frame on divergent lines, a fastening securing the divergent terminal portions together and to the base, and other fasteniugs securing the outer ends of the divided side or frame bar to the base, substantially as set forth.
2. A device substantially as specified for the purposes described consisting of a base, a spring-clamp formed of a single wire bent to provide a frame of approximately D form with the terminals brought together centrally of the straight side and bent to provide arms which project in an opposite direction from the frame on divergent lines and lie in the plane thereof, the members comprising the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature straight side inclining in opposite directions, in presence of two Witnesses. fastenin s seeurim the outer ends of the oppositely inclined niembers to the base, and a WILLIAM SMITH 5 single fastening securing the divergent arms Witnesses:
together and to the base, substantially as set GEORGE A. HAY, forth. FRANK E. POMERENE.
