PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 19, 1911.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912. Serial No. 650,095.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrir M. BEAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grampian, county of Clearfield, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Clips; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper clips and is more particularly directed to clips formed of bent wire.
The invention herein disclosed resides in connecting substantially superposed grip ping members of suitable form by a return loop which is extended unilaterally to aiford a torsion hinge so far removed from the gripping members that they may be widely separated to accommodate a number of sheets and so located with reference to the gripping member that the torsion exerted to hold the gripping members together tends to maintain parallelism between these gripping members.
The invention further resides in arranging this unilaterally extended connecting loop so that when the clip is applied to the papers the loop does not present projections which would contribute toward the accidental dislodgment of the clip, but serves admirably as a handle by which the clip may be easily manipulated into and out of engagement with the papers with which it may be used.
The invention further resides in the detailed form of the clip hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
The preferred form of my paper clip is bent in a single plane and from a single piece of wire of suitable diamete and stiffness to present two U-shaped legs of different lengths, which are connected by a top return loop which extends far to one side of said legs, the shorter of said two legs lying within the other in such manner that the wires touch, and the legs are as nearly superposed as is possible when they lie in the same plane when not in use. This construction gives the clip capacity for holding a number of sheets of paper together.
In the appended drawing I have illus trated my improved paper clip in two views. Figure 1 being a face view and Fig. 2 an edge view.
Referring to the drawing, the top reach A is straight and is designed to lie closely against the edges of the papers to be held, offering little opportunity for accidental dislodgment of the clip. This top reach A, atits right hand end, is bent downwardly at right angles to form the outer leg B. The left. hand end of the top reach A is bent in a return loop to first approach the by an inclined reach C and then to form the leg I) closely lying within leg )3. I prefer to parallel a portion of the reach C with the free end of the leg B so that the grip of these two parts, lying as they do across the surface of the papers, will offer resistance to the dislodgi'nent of the papers.
lVhat I claim is:
A paper clip bent from a single piece of wire to present two contiguous depending U-shaped legs of different lengths one of which has a laterally bent end, which legs are oined by aunilaterally extended return loop, the upper reach of said loop being inclined downwardly to one leg and parallel throughout a portion of its length to said bent end. of the other leg, one end of said piece of wire terminating within the loop, and beneath the right angled upper reach thereof, the other end of said wire lying below the inclined lower reach of the loop and terminating short of the adjacent end of the loop; substantially as described.
