JOHN ANDERSON, 0F MOUNT VERNON, MAINE.
IPAPER-CLIIE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of Mount'Vernon, Kennebec county, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. I
My invention relates to fasteners or clips which are adapted for clamping together bundles of loose sheets of paper, such as correspondence.
Une object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable fastener of this kind that shall be inexpensive to manufacture in large quantities and particularly adapted to be used with either a relatively thin bundle of paper or a bundle of material thickness.
1 amaware that many varieties of clips are well known and in general they may be divided into two classes; one comprlsing those which are relatively stifi' and small' .and are only useful for holding a few sheets of paper together, the other comprising those which are more yielding and usually larger in size and are particularly adapted for relatively thick bundles. It has been one of my aims to produce a clip which is peculiarly adapted for either of these uses, not by reason of its size, for itcan of course be made in various sizes, but-by reason of its double clamp structure.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be set forthhereinafter, and in order that my invention may be thoroughly understood 1 will now proceed to describe the same in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
Referring to the drawings Figures 1 to 7- inclusive, each'showdn outline, a: slightly different modification of my invention.-
' Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The clip illustrated in Fig. 1", comprises a wire loop 10 which in this modification is triangular in form. The inner end of the clip is bent into a double yoke 11 having the general form of a W. The base 12 of the triangular loop has relatively sharp bends at the adjacent corners 13 and 14, while the apex pf the triangle at 15 is abend of-larger radius. lhe inner end' of the loop which is formed into the double yoke, is closely Specification of Letters Patent.

fitted into the apex of the triangle and has a pair of loops l6 and 17 adjacent to the apex and a single flattened loop 18 parallel to the base 12.
Before describing the modifications of my invention which are illustrated in the other figures, I will describe the manner of utilizing the clip shown in Fig. 1. For relatively thick bundles of loose papers the clip may be opened so that the inner end of the large loop, including the double yoke 11, is on one side of the bundle, while the outer end of the wirev loop consisting of the two sides of the triangle, are on the opposite side of the bundle. The clip however, may be used with equal facility for a relatively thin bundle composed of a few sheets of paper, for example, by placing the flattened tongue projection 18 on one side of the bundle and the remainder of the clip on the other.
Attention is-also directed to the fact that the usefulness of the clip is not destroyed if for any cause it becomes broken at the apex 15 or at either of the corners 13 or 1%. The clip shown in Fig. 2 is very' similar to that of Fig. 1, except that its triangular shape is not so pronounced by reason of the fact that the apex bend is of larger radius relative to the length of the base. The form of Fig. 3 has the advantage of providing a more open central loop 18 which is of advantage when this part is utilized on one side of the package and the rest of the flattened cylindrical form. A
Sill
The manner of using the various struci tures will be easily scription of Fig. 1.
l have illustrated various forms merely to emphasize the fact that my invention is not limited to any specific form, although ll consider the forms shown to be particularly desirable and I intend? that only such understood from the delimitations'be imposed as are indicated in the appended claim.
. What I claim is: A paper fastener comprising a resilient wire with one portion bent in the form of a closed figure having a pair of straight sides and another portion bent into the form of a double yoke or W within the closed figure,
with the outer arms of the double yoke or W close to the aforesaid straight side of the closed figure, whereby the yoke portion and the closed figure portion may be placed on 0pposite sides of an object to be clamped and whereby the central member of the yoke or W and the remainder of the fastener may be used as an alternative clamp.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set 15 my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 29 day of October, 1914.
JOHN ANDERSON.
