WILLIAM CRAIGIE', 0F GODERICI-I, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-SIXTH WILLIAM MARLTON AND ONE-SIXTH T0 WILLIAM WALLACE, BOTH OF GODERIGH,
CANADA.
I-IATCI-I-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMar. 5,1912.
Application filed December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,528.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CRAIGIE, of the town of Goderich, in the county of Huron, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatch-Fasteners, of which the following is'the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hatch fasteners and the object of the invention is to devise a simple, and efficient fastener and one which may be cheaply constructed.
A further object is to construct a fastener which may be attached or detached in comparatively less time than with the hatch fastener at present in use.
My invention consists of a hatch clamp carried on a bracket arm and designed to engage the edge of the hatch cover and a tarpaulin clamp adapted to engage a batten above the tarpauiin, the latter clamp being carried on the same bracket arm as the hatch clamp, and both clamps being operated by a suitable lever all as hereinafter explained.
To more particularly describe my inven' tion I will refer to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one hatch fastener and a section of the hatch coaming and hatch. Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation intermediately broken away showing two fasteners.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 is the hatch coaming upon which the fasteners are mounted, and 2 is the hatch cover suitably shaped to fit over the edge of the coaming 1. 8 is the tarpaulin over the hatch.
4 is the hatch clamp pivoted to the bracket arm 5, and 6 is a cam which bears against the extending portion of the clamp 4 by which the clamp is held firmly against the top of the hatch cover 2, said cam being operated by a lever which is inserted in a suitable aperture 6 in the cam.
- 7 is a second clamping cam pivoted to the arm bracket 5 and adapted to engage a batten 8 by means of which the tarpaulin is firmly held down against the cover 2, said cam having an aperture 7 a in it which receives the end of the lever 9 by means of which the cam is operated.
It is of course to be understood that as many fasteners as required may be used. The cover is put on the hatch with the tarpaulin stretched over it and the clamps simply forced down by the cams operated by the lever. To remove the cover all that is necessary is to release the clamps when the tarpaulin and cover may be removed.
It will be observed from the above description that a fastener constructed according to my invention possesses the advantage of being easily and quickly applied and removed as well as being cheaply constructed and eflicacious for the purpose for which it is intended.
Many modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit or scope of the claim and the form shown is to be taken in illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with the hatch cover, coaming and tarpaulin, of a bracket arm secured to the coaming, a hook-shaped clamp pivoted to one side of the bracket arm having a suitable upper end designed to hook over the edge of the hatch cover, a cam having a suitable recess therein to receive the end of an operating lever, said cam being pivoted to the bracket arm and engaging the hookshaped clamp, a batten for holding the canvas in place and a supplemental cam pivoted to the opposite side of the bracket arm to the aforesaid cam and engaging the batten, said supplemental cam having a recess therein to receive the end of the operating lever, substantially as described.
