TRU NK-STRAP FASTEN'E R Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application led May 18,1906. Serial No. 317,641.
T @ZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, HENRY J. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
j Johns, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Trunk-Strap Fastener, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention pertains to improvements in what may be termed trunk-strap fasteners. Itsobject is to provide for readily and effectively performing the fastening operation, as well as quickly releasing the securing or fastening means, and to accomplish these ends in a simple, economic and expeditious manner.
Said invention consists of certain features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by theclaims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred. embodiment of my invention-- Figure l is a plan view of the sectional hasp like member. in opened-out or extended position. Fig. 2 is a broken plan view ofthe device in folded position. Fig. 3 is a side or edge view of the same in like position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section produced through Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side or edge view showing the parts as when in effective or secured position upon a trunk, the last noted, however, not being shown. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are sundry detail views of the invention.
In the disclosure of my invention, I employ, in connection with a web or strap meniber 1, a hasp-like member 2, and a loop or link 3 said link and hasp-member being suitably secured to said. strap, which, with adjunctive parts presently described, constitute a fastening contrivance or device ticularly designed for use with trunks. The strap or web 1 is in practice looped or returned upon itself and provided with a buckle a for engaging said strap or web to provide for suitably adjusting and effecting the retention of the latter in applying it for. use as presently explained.
The hasp-like member is composed of tw sections or parts 4, 5,v of substantially rectangular outline and hinged or articulated together endwise, so that one may be folded upon, or be opened outward from the other, as will be readily understood, the purpose of which will presently be apparent. The part paror section 4 has practically a rectangular recess 6 at that end which is secured to the web or strap 1,' and at the same end is ajstud or projection 7 which stud has an undercut notch, thus forming a keeper at that point the utility of which will be observable later. The section or part4 is preferably in skelet0n-like form for lightness while possessing the requisite strength and rigidity for its intended purpose. The other section or part 5 is provided at its free end preferably with a key-equipped lock 8 having a spring latchbolt effective to engage or snap into the notch of the stud or keeper 7 of the section or part 4. Said part or section 4 is also provided upon its outer surface, near its normally upper end. with a hook 9 having its free end overhanging preferably an1 orifice or opening and being brought nearer the plane of said part or section to remove it out of the Way.
It will be noted that, in use, the strap or web 1 being suitably applied to the trunk, the hasp-equipped end thereof is brought upward from the bottom of the trunk, along its front side, and the link or loopequipped end of said strap is brought, of course, from the opposite side, the two ends thus meeting or passing. The section or part 4 of said hasp-like member is arranged so as to present its hook 9 outward and the loop or link engaged with said hook, the requisite adjustment of said strap or web having been previously made to control its Y tightness, when, by forcing the section or part 5 into position upon the part or section 4, snapping the spring latch-bolt thereof into engagement with the keeper of part 4, the strap or web may be securely applied to the trunk for the effective retention of its cover in place or aiding such retention of the cover.
I claim- A device as described, comprising two articulated or pivoted together members, one member having a plate-like portion extending inward from its pivoting point, said plate-like portion being provided with an upward and forward curved hook, said member also having upraised. longitudinal portions arranged laterally of, and extending above said plate-like portion and forming in IOO to the terminal of said hook, the terminal of said hook also depending to a point close to said oree, and a strap-member connected the upper or outer surfaces of said longitudi- I to said link-member and one ofthe irst noted nel or lateral portions, the free ends of said l members.
members being adapted to be locked to-i HENRY J. PATTERSON. gether, a link-member eieetive for engage- Witnesses:
ment with said hook and said longitudinal or CHARLES M. MERRILL, lateral portions and direotlyin alineinent With i CLARK A. CUTT.
