UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
ROBERT VERCH, OF ALBANY, NEW-YORK.
sTRAr-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT VERCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strap-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a lock adapted for attachment to one end ofA a strap, being adapted also to receive the op'- posite end of the strap to hold it in locked position so that it cannot be released for yattachment unless a key is applied to the tumblers forming a portion of the lock, or a latch is moved that is connected with the tuniblers, the said lock being employed preferably as an auxiliary to a buckle or other well known means for fastening straps.
-The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the irnproved locking device and a strap to which it is applied, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the locking device and a portion of a strap showing the locking device in locked position; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking device in open position, and a portion of the strap connected with the device.
The locking device consists of a body section and a cover section. The body section consists of side pieces 10 that extend up from the bottom 10a and at one end of the bottom portion a loop 11 is formed, while at the opposite end a larger or longer loop 12 is produced, and the latter loop 12 is provided with a tongue 13 whereby a buckle A is produced integral with the aforesaid body of the locking device. One end of a strap B is attached to the loop section 11 of the locking device, while the opposite end of the stra is Specification of Letters Patent. v Application led February 18. 1907. Serial No. -357.869.

engagement with the body section through the medium of a pintle 18 passed through such portion ofthe cover and through ears 19 formed upon the bodyportion of the said locking device. A pin 20 extends down from the cover section adjacent to its pivotal connection with the body section, which pin is adapted to pass through apertures b in that portion of the strap B that passes through the locking device, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The cover is provided with a box section in front of its pivoted portion, said box section being designated as 22, and in this'box section a keyhole slot 23 is formed, and beneath this keyhole slot a key stud 24 is attached to the bottom portion of the said box casing, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, adapted to receive a key, which key acts upon one or more tumblers 25 suitably pivoted in the box casing, and the said tumblers are connected with a bolt 26, which bolt is adapted to enter a recess 15 in a stud 16 that is secured to the body portion of the locking device by means of a strap 14 or by equivalent means, the said stud 16 occupying a central position relatively to the said pieces 10 of the said y in Fig. 2. An opening 27 is made in the cover section whereby to receive the said stud 16 when the cover is closed downupon the body section, and when the cover is closed it lies iiat andv in perfect engagement vwith the body portion of the locking device, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but the cover may be opened and thrown back so as to expose the end of the strap, as is illustrated in Fig. 3. v It will be understood that the tumblers are spring-controlled, as is customary, snapping into place the moment that the cover is carried down to an engagement with the body section of the locking device.
Through the employment of a locking device constructed as described, it is absolutely impossible for the free end of a strap to become detached from the buckle, and the said locking device is of such al simple, durable and economic-character that it can be applied to any strap, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with harness.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters' 1. A fastening device for straps, cornprising abody section having a loop'extension at one end and a buckle extension at the opposite end, and a recessed stud located at a point above its bottom and a cover hinged to the body having tumblers for engagement with the said stud of the body.
2. A locking device for straps, consisting of a body section comprising a bottom member, side members extending upwardly therefrom, a loop member at one end and a buckle member at the opposite end and a recessed stud located above the bottom, a cover hinged tothe body provided with a pin adapted to enter the strap and an opening to receive the studs, tumblers located within the cover, and a bolt connected with the tumblers to enter the recess in the' said stud.
3. A locking device for a strap, comprisi ing a body section having a loop at one end and a buckle at itsl opposite end and a re-y cessed stud located above its bottom portion, A
a cover for the said body hinged thereto protwo subscribing witnesses.
