Description
iinirnn' STaTns PATENT @Trice ARDEN D. KMBALT., OF MILES, IO\\'A.
TOBACCO-BOX.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,050, dated March 5, 1889.
Application tiled December 3, 1888. Seriai No. 292,464. (No model.)
l'lo @ZZ whom, 7'15 may concern:
lie it known that LARDEN D. KLMBALL, a citizen olf the United States, residing at Miles, in the county of Jackson and State ot' lowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Tobacco-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of i this specification.
This invention relates to tobacco and snuff boxes.
The object oi' the invention is to provide means for fastening the cover on the same, which consists of a weighted leek-bolt, which in one position ot' the box extends across the joint between the box and the cover and holds the cover fast, and which in a certain other position of the box will be withdrawn trom the path of the cover by the superior torce of gravity and permit the said cover to be readily opened.
The improvement further consists in the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying' my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view, parts being broken away, showing the cover thrown back. Fig. f3 is a det-ail section, parts being broken away, on the line .c if oi' Fig. l. lfig. '.Jf is a view similar to Fig. i3, the box being reversed; and Fig. 5 adetal top plan view ot' one end of the box, the cover being removed.
The box A may be ot' any desired form and size, having a thickened portion, (L, which receives the gravity locking-bolt and the pivot that connects the cover' thereto. The cover B, connected at one end to the box by the pivot l), is heid from turning by the pin lil at the other end et the box iitting in the' notch I) inthe other end ol' the cover. The opening 1) in the cover, through which the pivot l) extends, is curved so that when the cover turned around it will at the same time be drawn back sufficiently far to disengage it from the pin E.
The gravity locking-bolt G is mounted on the lever g, which is weighted at the end opposite the said bolt G. The purpose oi' the weight ll is to control the position ot the locking-bolt G. The lever o is pivoted midway ot its ends in a recess, l, in the box, and the weight and the locking-bolt work in end enlargements, 't' and i, oi the said recess l.
rlhe supplemental cover J is mounted atI one end on the pivot D, and its other end has an extensiond', which is adapted to impinge against the pin E and limit its movement. The supplemental cover is not essential, but is provided to cover the slot h in the cover B, and as a greater security against opening the box by any one not familiar with the workings of the same.
The opera-tion of the device follows: The covers being closed and the box placed with the covers uppermost, the weight H will gravitate and effect a projection of the locking-bolt G, which will enter the slot o', or otherwise engage with the said cover and lock the same. To open the cover, reverse the box and the weight will withdraw the lockin g-bolt. The covers being' free, can be readily opened.
ll'aving thus described 1n y invention, what l claim, and desire to secure bylietters Patent,
l. The combination, with the box, the cover pivoted at one end to one end of the box and havin g a notch at its other end, which is engaged by a pin on the other end of the box, the opening through which the pivot Vpasses being extended and curved in its length, oi' the gravity locking-bolt adapted to enter the said longitudinally-curved opening, substantially as and for the purpose described.
.2. The combination, with the box and. the liorizontally-moving cover, 0l the lever pivoted midway of its ends,tl1e weight at one end of the lever and the locking-bolt at the 9 other end oi' the lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
rlhe combination of the box and the covers B and J, the cover B having a notch, Z1, in its front end and an opening or slot, if',
IOO
nezu its 'rem' end, curved. in its length, of the pin E for limiting the movement of the Covers, the pvot D, connecting' the Covers with the box and passing through the said longitudmadly-Curved Opening b', and the gravity looking-bolt normally projecting into the Said curved opening', Substantially-LS described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARDEN D. KIMBALL. fitnessess N. L. KIMBALL, E. HAMMERSCHMIDT.
