To 'aZZ'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro E..STAACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Townsend, in the county of Jefferson and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in looks and it is an object of themvention to provide a novel and improved means of this general character adapted to be employed in connection with a controlling lever provided with a latch mechanism including a release lever fulcrumed to the controlling lever and which serves to hold the release lever against movementto prevent unauthorized operation of thecontrolling lever, the same being an improvement on the lock described in my prior Patent No. 1,242,256, dated Oct. 9, 1917.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lock wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the I better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view in elevation of the upper portion of a controlling lever, illustrating a lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of my improved lock detached, the same being opposite to the showing of the lock in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings C denotes a controlling lever of a type employed in connection with the emergency brake on a Ford automobile and R denotes a release lever fulcrumed on the controlling lever C and which serves to release the well known type of latch. As the lower end portion of the controlling lever C and the latch form no part of my present invention and are well known a disclosure thereof is not believed necessary.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved lock comprises a body 'B having its side marginal portions defined by the inwardly directed flanges 1, and 2 with the outer longitudinal margins of the flanges 1 and 2 provided therealong with the inwardly disposed flanges 3. The flange 1 is concavo convex in cross section with its convex face outwardly directed to receive a handle H. The flange 2 has pressed outwardly therefrom a rib or bead 4 which is adapted to snugly fit within the upper or free end portion of the release lever B. It will therefor be at once understood, that with the body B properly positioned between the handle H and the release lever B, the lever B is efiectively held against inward movement.
Permanently secured to the outer face of the body B, or plate as it mayalso be called,
is a transversely disposed strap 5 and its opposite end portions returned as at 6 with the bent portions cut-away asat 7 to provide the knuckles 8.
9 denotes a hasp substantiallyU-shaped in form with its arm a of a length greater than the second arm I). The outer end portion of the arm 6 is provided with a knuckle 10 fitting between the knuckles 8 adjacent the flange 1 and disposed through the alined knuckles 8 and 10 is a pintle of a conventional type.
The base portion of the hasp 9 is adapted to bridge or straddle the handle H of the controlling lever C and the arm a is of a length to bridge the space between the flanges 3 and to contact with said flanges 3 when the hasp 9 is in looking position.
11 denotes a second hasp also substantially U-shaped in form with its shorter arm 0 provided at its outer or free end with a knuckle 12- fitting between the second pair of knuckles 8 and disposed through the registering knuckles 12 is a pintle 14 of a well known type. The base portion of the hasp 11 is adapted to contact with the outer face of the release lever R when the hasp 11 is in looking position and the longer arm d of the hasp 11 is adaptedto overlie the arm a of the hasp 9 and to terminate outwardly of the inner end of said arm a so that the hasp 11 may be conveniently swung or moved into released position.
The arm (Z of the hasp 11 is provided with a slot 15 through which is adapted to be directed a staple member 16 carried by the arm a of the hasp 9 when the hasps 9 and 11 are in locked adjustment. A padlock 17 or the like is adapted to be engaged with the staple, as illustrated in Fig. l, for bolding the hasps 9 and 11 against outward swinging movement. The space betweenthe flanges 3 permits the ready insertion of a digit of a hand inwardly of the hasps 9 and 11 to facilitate the outward swinging movement thereof when it is desired to remove my improved lock from applied position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a lock constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted to use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the appearance and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation. of the several. parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1 claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a lock adapted to be inserted between a lever and a release lever fulcrumed thereto, said lock comprising a plate provided with side flanges, one of said flanges having a face convex in cross section for contact with the lever, the second flange having an outstanding rib to engage the inner face of the release lcver, hasps pivotally engaged With the plate, each of said hasps being substan tially U-shaped in form, so as to bridge the levers and to overlap each other and means for holding the hasps against outward movement when in closed position, one of the hasps contacting with marginal portions of the side flangeswhen' in'locking position. 2. As a new article of manufacture, a lock adapted to be inserted between a lever and a release lever fulcrnmed thereto, said lock comprising a plate provided with side flanges, one of said flanges having a face convex in cross section for contact with the lever the second flange having an outstanding rib to engage the inner race of the release lever, hasps pivotally engaged with the plate, each of said hasps being substantially tl-shaped in form, so as to bridge the levers and to overlap each other and means for holding the hasgs against outward movement when in closed position, the free longitudinal margins of the flanges being defined by inwardly directed flanges with which one of the hasps are adapted to contact when in locking position.
