Description

A. M. H; DEBRUYCKER.
PADLOGK.
APPLICATION TILED JULY 17, 1909.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Hm W 7 IIIII/IIIIIIIIIIIIIII/ 4 WITNESSES AUGUST M. H. DE BRUYCKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PADLOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 17, 1909.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Serial No. 508,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST M. H. on BRUYGKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Padlock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to locks having a main bolt formed of hook members, such, for instance, as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 917,536, granted to me April 6, 1909.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved padlock, having both side arms of the hasp notched for engagement by the hooked members of a bolt, actuated by key-controlled means.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the padlock and showing the hasp in locked position; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, showing the hasp unlocked and in open position; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. l is a side elevation of one of the tumblers.
The padlock casing A is provided near its sides with recesses B, B, for engagement by side members C, G of the hasp- C. The side members G, C of the hasp are provided at their inner faces with oppositely-disposed notches C C adapted to be en aged by the hooks D D of the members and D of the lock bolt, and which members D, D are pivoted on a pivot E, preferably in the form of a stud secured to the lock casing A. The bolt members D and D are pressed apart by a spring F seated at its ends in suitable recesses forme near the outer hook ends of the bolt members D .and D, the spring F serving to normally hold the hooks D and D in engagement with the notches C C The members D and D of the bolt are caused to swing by the use of one or more tumblers G,
controlled by a key H and preferably mounted m a tumbler casing I secured to the bolt casing A, as indicated in Fig. 3. The
tumblers G when in the position shown in Fig. 1 extend lengthwise of the padlock, between the inner ends of the bolt members D and D, so that the spring F can hold the members D and D apart, so that the hooks D D engage the notches C C of the hasp C, thus holding the latter in a closed position. Now when the key H is inserted and turned, to turn the tumblers G, then the latter act on the inner ends of the bolt members D, D to impart a swingirig motion to the same, so that the hooks D move out of engagement with the notches C C, thus unlocking the hasp G and allowing opening thereof, as lndicated in Fig. 2.
In order to withdraw the key H, the tumblers G have to be turned back to the lengthwise position shown in Fig. l, and
when this takes place the spring F opens the bolt members D, D, so that the hooks D D thereof readily engage the notches C G whenever the hasp C 1s pushed back into locking position.
The side arm 0 of the hasp (He provided with the usual flattened portion O and the annular groove G adapted to be engaged by a pin J, so as to allow of sliding the hasp C outward or inward and to allow of turning the hasp with the side arm C as the fulcrum, whenever the hasp is in the open position shown in Fig. 2, to readily engage the hasp with the parts to be locked.
The padlock shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, and as the bolt members engage both side arms C, C of the hasp, it is evident that the hasp is securely held in position toprevent withdrawal of the hasp C unless both bolt mem bers are actuated simultaneously by the tumblers G controlled by the proper key H.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A padlock comprising a has having its side arms provided with note es on their inner faces, a bolt comprising pivotallycon-- nected members having at one end out wardly extending hooks for engaging the notches, a spring between the members at the said end, a tumbler case secured between the members at the opfiosite end from the spring, and key contro ed tumblers in the said casing for moving said members In testimony vvhereof I have signed my egainst iihe tengion of the spring whereby name to this speeifica'twn in the presence of to disengage the hooks from the notches, two subscribing Witnesses.
and a casing having sockets for receiving AUGUgjr M11. DE BRUYGKER. 5 the arms of the heap, and a cavity for the Witnesses:
0111 and openings between the cavity and FREDERICK LUSKE,
the sockets for the passage of the hooks. H. M. RANDALL.
