Description

N. HILL. CAR DOOR `LOCK.
APPLICATION FIYLED MAY18,1921.
Nlfalzl g LL.
*BT it?? li.. sans NIKALAL HILL, or PARK FALLS, wisconsin.
CAR-DOOR LOCK.
Application filed May 18,
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that T, NIKALAI HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fark Falls, in the county of Price, State of `Wis consin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door fasteners, and particularly to fasteners fo-r box car doors.
One object of the invention is to provide a lock for the purpose named which will draw the door into full and firm closed position, and which is so constructed that the lock or fastener may be retained by a seal.
Another object is to provide a loclr of the character named which is simple in construction, easy to operate, and which can be readily applied to box cars now in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the -accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a box car and door, showing the invention applied thereto, the door being in closed position and the lock in operative and sealed condition.
Figure 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view through the lock, and portion of the door and doorway frame, on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, which passes between the pivoted member and the side of the supporting bracket thereof.
Figure 3 is a similar sectional view, but showing the door in partly open position, with the door carried member disengaged from the car carried member.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 re resents a portion of a door, and 11 a portion of the door frame of a box car, in connection with which the invention is used.
Secured to the outer face of the door 10, and projecting a short distance beyond the outer free end of the door, is a bar 12, the outer end of which is turned outwardly into the form of a hook 13, the inner and outer faces of which are preferably curved.
Carried by the door frame in position to y Specioation of Letters Patent. Patented July 25, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 470,494.
receive therebetween, the hook 13, is a pair of outstanding parallel mjembers 14, said members being fo-rmed on a base, integral with said members, as shown at 15, and said base is secured to the door frame, by the screws or bolts 16. Formed transversely through the outer portions of the members 14, are the openings 17 and 18, which align, each with the other openings of the other member. Disposed between the members 14 is a cam 19, having a handle lever 20 projecting therefrom for permitting manipulation of the cam. A pivot pin 21 is disposed through the openings 17 of the members 14, and thro-ugh the cam, so that the cam can be rocked thereon. The hook 13 is arranged to pass freely beneath the cam, when the said cam is swung outwardly into the position shown in Figure 3, and when the cam is again swung inwardly the face thereof will engage in the concave curved face of the hook and exert pressure thereon in a direction toward the door frame, longitudinally of the door, as well as inwardly transversely of the door. Thus the door will be placed in completely closed position against the door frame, whereby all danger of rattling or looseness is obviated.
The cam has a second transverse opening 22 formed therein which is arranged to register with the openings 18, of the members 14, when the cam is swung into locked position, and through the openings 18 and 22 is passed the metal ribbon 23 of the seal. Thus the cam is held against opening movement, and theidanger of tampering unless the seal is broken.
What is claimed is:
1. A car door lock comprising a door carried hook, a device carried by the door frame and comprising parallel side members each having a pair of openings therethrough, a cam lever mounted between the side members, a pivot pin disposed through an opening of each side member and through the cam lever, said cam lever being arranged to engage the hook between the side members, the cam lever having a transverse opening arranged to align with the other openings of the side members to receive a seal ribbon therethrough.
2. The combination with a door frame and a sliding door, of a bar carried by the door and projecting beyond one edge thereof and having its free end turned outwardly away frame and to move the door inwardly within the frame.
In testimony whereof, I aHiX- my signature, in the presenceI of two witnesses.
NIKALAI HILL. Witnesses:
