DOOR LOCK.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SALVATORE COLAVITA, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented the Improvements in Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a single lock for fastening two doors, the invention being particularly adapted for use as a lock for the doors of automobiles where the two doors are arranged close together and separated by a narrow vertical strip.
A further object of the invention is to locate the lock in a fixed position on'the meeting strip between two doors so that the lock will engage both doors.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby one or the other of the doors can be opened without releasinthe other door.
hese objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying draw,
ings, in which,
1 1 is a side view of suicient of an automo ile to illustrate my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the meeting strip showing the lock in position;
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the meeting strip showing the inside handle;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4- -4,
Fig: 2;
I ig. 5 is a sectional plan view on the line 5 5, Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a the lock; and
f Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the lock.
1 is the body of an automobile, 2 and 3 are the front and rear doors and 4 is a meeting strip located between the two doors and is a fixed portion of the automobile body. The door 2 is hinged at the front at 5 and the door 3 is hinged at the rear at 6. 7 is a lock casing mounted in the meeting` strip 4 and has sliding bolts 8 and 9 which. engage keepers on the doors, as shown 1n fFlg. 5, to lock the doors in a closed position. The bolts are independently mounted in the casing as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and are projected by a spring 10 or other suitable means and one bolt slides past the other as shown in said iigure.' rIhe bolt 8 has a projection 11 and the bolt 9 has a projection 12. 13 is a rocker attached to the spindle 14 to which is attached the outside handle 15 and the inside handle 16. The rocker has detached perspective view of Specification of Letters Patent.

extensions which engage the projections 11 and 12 on the bolts 8 and 9.y
If the handle 15 is moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2,-^it will withdraw the bolt 8' and allow the door 2 to be opened and if the `handle is moved in the opposite dlrection it will withdraw the bolt 9 and allow the door 3 to be opened so that by moving the handle away from either door that particular door will be free to be opened.
In the present instance I provide locking mechanism Ioperated by a knurled knob 17 on the inside of the ca-r and this knob is mounted on a spindle 18 having a cam 19 which engages a bolt 20 having a, projection 21 which enters a notch 22 in the rocker 13 so that when the bolt 20 is raised the rocker is free to turn. `A key 23 is adapted to a key slot 24 and is arranged to engage the spindle 18 so as toI turn the cam 19 from the outside.'
While I'have shown one form of means for locking and operating the bolts, other means will readily suggest themselves to any one skilled in the art and it will be seen by the above construction that the two doors are entirely free of locking mechanism and that a single lock is arranged to engage both doors.
While the invention is particularly adapted for use in automobiles, the invention can be used in any place where two doors close against a parting strip.
I claim:
1. 'The combination of a body of an automobile having two doorways separated by a narrow meeting strip; two doors hung to the frame opposite the meeting strip; a single lock casing mounted on the meeting strip; an operating spindle having a handle and pivotally mounted on the casing; a rocker secured to the spindle; two sliding bolts independently mounted in the casing; and means for projecting the bolts, one bolt engaging one door and the other bolt engaging the other door, said rocker being arranged to engage and withdraw one bolt, when turned in one direction by the handle, and to withdraw the other bolt when the handle -is turned in the opposite direction.
2. The combination of two doors; a parting strip between the two doors; av lock casing mounted in the parting strip; a spindle having a rocker; two sliding bolts independently mounted in the casing and arranged (22 i ramene to be withdrawn by the rbclrer; a spring for projecting the bolts; a handle on each end of the spindle; a locking mechanism engaging the bolteoperating mechanism when projected; and means for actuating the locking mechanism consisting of a spindle having a knob at one end and a key engaging means at the opposite end.
3. The combination in a lock for locking two doors at the same time, o-t a casing adapted to be secured to a meeting strip between two doorways; a spindle mounted on the casing; a rocker secured thereto; two sliding bolts mounted in the easing; a spring for projecting the bolts, one bolt extending through one side of the casing and the other bolt extending through the opposite side thereof, each bolt having a projection, the rocker having extensions arranged to engage the projections when it is turned by its spindle; a locking bolt having a projection; a notch in the rocker to receive the projection; a locking spindle; and a cam thereon engaging the locking bolt so that, when the locking spindle is turned, the locking bolt will. be moved into engagement with the rocker and will prevent it being moved by its handlea 4. rllhe combination Ain a lock casing, of two sliding bolts independently mounted in the casing, one bolt arranged to project at one side of the casing and the other bolt arranged to project at the opposite side of the casing; a single means for actuating the bolts independently; andl locking mechanism arranged to engage the bolt-actuating means to lock both bolts in the projected position..
