In my Letters Patent No. 1,512,915, dated October 28, 1924, I showed a door lock and, the present invention may be applied to a lock of that character although it is not limited in all of its aspects to a lock of that character; Most locks for stores and other places of business as well as homes usually have a cylinder accessible from outside the door so that by means of a key inserted ininside without a key ;and this knob generally operates independently of the cylinder; that is to say, either the knob, or the key insert-- ed in the cylinder may be used to throw the bolts in or out. One of the objects of my invention isto providea lock having the exterior cylinder and the inner knob but in addition, I provide a cylinder accessible from inside the door together with means by which the knob or handle can be locked in either position, One advantage of this is that where the lock is placed on a door near a glass or where a slight opening can be made sufficient to reach in to the knob, with the present lock, this attempt would not succeed where the knob is'locked against operation. So long as a personremains within the building he may use the knob for throwing the lock on or off and then when leaving the building the inner or auxiliary cy'l inder may be used to lock the knob and then when the operator closes the door from the outside he may use the keyinserted in the exteriorcylinder for throwing on the look. When: that has been done the door can not be opened either from the outside or inside without the key. My invention therefore relates to a novel device for locking the knob or other hand controlled member.
Another object of my invention is to improve the construction of the bolts and frame plate or keeper showninmy said copending application. In the present case the upper and lower bolts which'project into the keep-' er enter into lateral pockets at both the top and bottom of eachbolt so that-the lock will' resist any attempt to open the; door with greater strength than the construction shown in my co-pending application.

The embodiment shown in the drawings includes the casing 1 adapted to contain the various operating parts ofthe lock and this is closed by a removable cover 2. At one end of the casing there is a wall 3 from which project thetwo extensions 4 5 which are larger at their outer ends than their inner ends, producing a dovetail shape. These projections are of U shape in cross section and the upper and lower bolts 6. 7 carried with thesliding bolt plate 8 are adapted to lie partly within these projections 4,5 when sliding into and out of the casing through thewall 3. In addition, the bolt plate 8 carries a middle bolt 9 which also slides in an aperture in the wallS.
.The keeper or, member which is attached to the door frame is shown in Figures 4 to door 6 inclusive and it includes a plate 1.0 which;
is attached to the door frame by screws as shown in Figure 2. This member also 1n- :cludes a frame 11 disposed at right angles to the plate 10 and it is provided with screw holes 12 for receiving'other screws for attaching this member to the door frame.
Looking at the front ofthisframe, there are dovetail openings 13, 14, adapted to freely receive the projections 4, 5 of the lock as the door 15 swings't-o the closed position. -Part ofthe openings 13, 14 are defined by pro- 'jections 16 and behind these projections there are formed upper and lower pockets 17, 18 to receive the upper and lower edges of the bolt member 6; and there are upper and lower pockets 19, 20 to receive the upper and lower edges of the bolt member-7i When the door closes it is understood that the several bolts are retracted within the lock casing and the projections 4; 5, enter freely into the dovetail openings 13, 1.4 of the keeper. When the bolts are thrown, the upper bolt 6 will enter the upper and lower pockets 17. 18 and lie behind the projections 16. The lower bolt 7 will enter the upper and lower pockets 19, 2O lying behind the projections 16, and the intermediate bolt 9 will enter the opening 21. The door will then be locked not only against opening by swinging on its hinge but the dovetail connection between the projections 4, 5 and the dovetail sockets 13, 14 prevent the door from being forced edgewise and therefore the lock resists opening in every direction. The advantage in the present construction over that of my co-pending case is the added strength obtained by making both upper and lower pockets 17, 18, 19, 20, for the upper and lower bolts.
The bolt plate 8 is guided to move hori- Zontally by the abutments 22 formed on the inside of the lock casing, and by apost 23 which passes through an aperture 24 in the bolt plate. The bolt plate also has an enlarged opening 25 at one end to form a shoulder 26 against which the bolt-throwing members may engage to throw over the bolts into locking position and there is an abutting edge 27 against which the same members may engage to retract the bolts. There is an arm 28 pivoted on the pin 29 and it is forced downwardly by means of the spring 30. This member has a projection 31 which is adapted to engage on either side of the abutment 23 for holding the bolts in either locked or unlocked. position, and it is necessary to swing the member 28 to disengage the projection 31 from the abutment 23 toeither lock or unlock the bolts. This member 28 extends to the right and is provided with a lateral finger 32 which is adapted to be actuated by either of the bolt-throwing members for lifting the member 28 to disengage the projection 31 from the abutment 23.
There is a key cylinder 33 set into the door 15 and accessible from the outside of the door to receive the key 34. The cylinder 33 has the usual tongue 35 which enters the rectangular slot 36 in the bolt-throwing member 37 so that when the tongue 35 is turned by means of the key inserted in the cylinder 33 the projection 38 on the boltthrowing member will engage the member 32 to swing the arm 28 and it will also engage the shoulder 26 of the bolt plate in one di rection to throw the bolts into locking position, and when moving in the reverse direction it engages the shoulder 27 to retract the bolts. This part of the device corresponds with that shown in my said co-pending application and it forms the ordinary means for locking and unlocking the door,

There is a second bolt-throwing member 39 alignment with the member 37 and it has two projections or wings 40 extending in opposite directions, one of which acts on the member 32 and on the abutments 2G, 27 to throw the bolt plate in the same manner and for the same purpose as the member 37 and it is adapted to operate while the latter member remains idle.
There is a handle or knob 42 projecting from the lock casing at the inside of the door and this is adapted to be revolved by hand. It projects through the wall 43 of the'lock casing and inside there is fixed to it the bolt throwing member 39. By turning the knob '42 the bolt plate 8 may be moved was right or left by one of the wings 40 in the same manner that the plate is moved by the member 37.
Within the casing there are guiding abutments 44 which guide the horizontally sliding plate 45 which is provided with looking projections 46 which are adapted to straddle either of the wings 40 on the bolt-throwing member 39 whenever one ofthese wings lies in the right hand position shown in Figure 3. The sliding plate 45 is provided with rack teeth 47 which are operated by a small pinion wheel 48 movable with one of the members of an ordinary lock cylinder 49. This cylinder 49 is disposed in a compartment 50 formed as an extension of the lock casing andthe cylinder is so disposed that the key 51 can be inserted only from the inside of the door.. When the key is inserted in this cylinder the pinion 48 may be revolved to the left or right for the parpose of sliding the plate 45 into or out of locking engagement with one of the wings 40 of the bolt-throwing member 39. The lock is always in condition to be operated by a key inserted in the cylinder 33 either to lock or unlock the door from the outside. when the plate 45 is in the right hand position shown in Figure 3 the knob 42 may be operated from the inside to either lock or unlock the door and this will ordinarily be used so long as a person remains within the building. vs hen'the occupant is about to leave the building or at any other time it is desired to make the knob inoperative, the key 51 is inserted in the cylinder 49 and turned and this will cause the pinion 48 to move the plate 45 to the left in Figure 3 so that the projections 46 straddle one of the wings 40 and prevent the knob 42 from being turned in either direction. When the lock is thus set the knob 42 can not be operated and therefore the bolts can not be thrown in either direction except by insert ing the key either in the cylinder 49 or in the cylinder 33. WVhen the lock is set in this condition even though by means of a small 65' shown in Figure 7, whichis arranged in j opening a person should reach in to the knob 42 it will not be possible to unlock the door. v r
Having described my invention, What I claim is:
'1. A door lock comprisinga casing, a bolt therein, a cylinder for said lock arranged whereby the bolt may be operated from outside the door by a key, a hand operated member or knob on said lock accessible only from inside the door for oper ating the bolt independently of said cylinder, and a cylinder accessible only from inside the door for locking said hand operated member against operation.
2. A door lock comprising a casing, abolt therein, means accessible from outside the door for operating the bolt with a key, a hand operated bolt throwing means accessible inside the door for operating the bolt and including a member having Wings, a
sliding member adapted to straddle said wings to prevent the operationof said hand operated means, and a cylinder accessible inside the door by means of which a key will jection when the door is closed, said recess having upper and lower pockets to receive the upper and lower edges of the bolt and means for operating the bolt.
