DOOR LOCK.
Application filed October 20, 1921. Serial No. 509,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAuUEL EDnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door locks. The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive lock of strong construction which will protect a door against `forcible opening. My improved lock notonly prevents the door being swung open on its hinges but it also prevents it from being forced edgewise as by a jimmy or similar instrument. It is common practice for burglars to apply a jimmy to the edge of a door to force the door edgewise,and there is generally sufficient clearance between the door and its frame to permit the door to be forced. edgewise sufficiently to allow a knife or other iiatinstrument to be inserted between the door andv the door frame, for the purpose ofn moving the bolt of the lock back and thus permit the door to be opened. AThe purpose of my invention is to fprotect the door from beingforced edgewise in the manner described, as well as preventing it from being forced open by a swinging motion; or in other words, to perform the same function as the ordinary lock and in addition, to prevent jimmying. I am awarev that locks have been devised to give this double protection, but they have been complicated and expensive and they have complicated mechanism which has to be operated each time the `key is turned to lock and unlock the door. In the present lock a single plate and bolts of the simplest construction and operated by simple means of ordinary construction may serve to .lock the door, in conjunction with certain locking means on the casing and the sash plate.

I have shown my invention applied to an ordinary swinging door l and the door frame .plate 2 is attached to the door frame. The door .frame plate 2 is here shown as embodying' a plate portion V3 whichy is set -ber in place.
The frame member 2 is, so formed as to provide sockets 9 above and below the bolt socket l0. The latter is preferably half round as shown, to conformto the shape of the bolt. The front of the housing 6 is formed with shoulders 11 and 12 and the block 15 is formed with shoulders 13A and 14 which constitute dovet'ail pocketsl 16 to receive the male portions ofthe lock casing, as will appear hereafter. The lock comprises a casing or shell 17 having a closing cover 19 secured thereto by screws andrforming an enclosure 18 in which the mechanism of the lock is enclosed. The lock casing is secured to the door by screws 21 passing through the wall 2O and entering the door.
The lock casing is provided with an eX- tension preferably formed integral therewith. This extension forms an abutment at 23 for one edge of the cover; and it forms a projection which is U shaped as viewed i which cooperate With the dovetail sockets 16 in the door frame member 2.
A single sliding bolt plate 28 may be vused for locking the door to reduce the mechanism fth'e lock tothe simplest `form. The sleeve 51f'has an arm 52 which operates on the same membersas do the arms 44 to release the deadlock member; 39 and to shootf the bolts. AV lock comprising a member adapted to be secured to the door frame and having iso a block provided with a socket to receive a bolt and having interlocking dovetail sockets above and below said socket to receive projections on the lock casing as the door is swung closed, a lock casing having interlocking, dovetail projections of substantially U shaped cross section, adapted to enter said dovetail sockets, a plate and a plurality of bolts thereon, one of which is adapted to enter the socket in said block and 10 the others being adapted to slide in said dovetail projections and to interlockingly enfrage said rst member.
