To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. YANGHIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in closure devices, and more particularly to devices adapted to look a plurality of drawers or doors. h
The primary object of the invention is to provide a .locking'mechanism of the above nature in which itis unnecessary to operate a master drawer to cause other drawers to become locked, whereby certain of the drawers may be locked while others may remain open.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above nature wherein the latch mechanism automatically returns to a locked position immediately after the locking mechanism has been actuated to release the drawers, thereby making it possible to lock the drawers independently of each. other. i i
A further object ofthe invention is to provide means for causingthe drawers to spring to an; open position as soon as the lock mechanism has been actuated to release the drawers, whereby the keepers therefor may become disengaged from the locking mechanism which automatically returns to a locked position when the locking mechanism has been actuated to release the drawers.
' Still another object of the invention is to provide adevice of the above nature having key-actuated means for controlling the looking mechanism. n

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 7 indicates a piece of furniture, such as a desk having a plurality of vertically aligned drawers slidably mounted therein, and a hinged closure or door 9. The drawers are slidably mounted in the usual manner upon guides 10 more clearly seen in Figure 2, which are supported at their innermost ends by a skeleton supporting struc ture 11. This structure includes horizontal bars 12 arranged in back of each drawer and a pair of projectors 13 are associated with each bar 12. These projectors each'include a casing having a spring pressed plunger 14 associated therewith in a manner that the plunger normally bears against the back of the drawer so that When the latter is released by the locking mechanism the drawer slides to an open position.
The back of each drawer is provided with a rearwardly projecting keeper 15 as most clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4 and consists of a rearwardly or inwardly projecting body portion to the free end of which is hinged as at 17 a nose 18. A spring 19 is interposedbetween the nose and body portion and is fastened to the former whereby the nose is arranged laterally of the body portion. This nose is equipped at its free end with an integral arm 20 which extends toward the body portion, the inner end of which is provided with an angular extension 21. This angular extension. is adapted for engagement with the arch portion of a U- shaped retaining member 22, the free ends of which are pivotally connected to opposite sides of the body portion as clearly seen. Consequently the retainingmember limits the outward swinging movement of the nose,
. but still permits of the same .moving inwardly toward the body portion. A similar keeper 15 is secured to the inner surface of the door 9. v v
The locking mechanism consists of a latch member 23 for each drawer. Each latch member has itsfree end' provided with a hook or nose adapted forengagement with the-movable noseof its respective keeper, and the opposite end of the latch member is secured in desired manner t0 2 shaft 2 i This shaft is vertically arranged in back of the drawers Sand isjof a sufficient length to insure connection ofall of the latch members thereto. The shaft is mounted for'oscillation and to the sideropposite said latch mem her is secured a laterally projecting connector element which is pivotally connected-1 at its free end to one end of a rod 26. The opposite end of this-rod is pivotally connected to a. similar connector element 27 which is secured to a second vertically'arranged shaft 28, which'may be termedan oscillatory member.
An" arm. 29 is secured to the oscillatory ppsition'to cause 'the'latch'memb'ers 23jto be normally arranged in lockedpositions. The opposite end of the actuator rod is connectedto the end of a triplever 34 which is pivotally mounted between its ends in an opening provided in theside'ofthe desk. The free end of the. trip' lever projects beyond. the side of the desk to be disposed within a lock, casing 35, the face ofjwhichis provided with .an elongated slot 36havingan enlarged opening between its ends forthe admission of a key37. Secured to'the inner surfaces of opposite sides of the lock casing. 35 and at the ends of thekey slot 36, a'pair of spacedinwardly projecting lugs 38 are secured. It is to be noted that the pairs of lugs at opposite ends of the slots are arranged upon opposite sides of the slots as clearly shown in Figure 3, so. that the proper key 37 having its. end provided with oppositely extending projections 39 may be turned to permit the fingers 39 of the keypassing between the spaced lugs 38 and engaging with the free end of the triplever 34 in order to move the actuator rod 30.
The locking mechanism also includes means for locking the door 9, and includes an angle lever-4L0 pivoted at the angle thereof to a depending post 41 secured to theunder side to the top of the desk top. One arm of the angle lever is pivotally asso ciated with a slot in the end ofthe actuator rodfadjacent the connection with the trip lever, whilethe free end of the other'arm of. the angle leveris' pivotally connected to alinkfilQ'. The opposite endoffthis'link is pivotally connected to a latchlever 43 which is pivoted between its" ends and provided with a nose :tor'engagement with the keeper 15 secured to the door. It will of course be obvious. that a projeot.or.,-l3fmay also be associated' -with the door-whereby "the same is swung open when the lock mechanism is actuated to release the-same.
In the operation of the device and assuming that all drawers and the door 9 are in a closed position as shown in Figure 2, and it is desired to unlocktheadrawers, the key 37 is inserted into the casing and turned so. that one of the projecting' fingers-39 will liftthe free-end of thetrip;34l. This action-will cause the actuator rod '30' to be pulled 'to: ward the front of the "desk, and against'ten: sion of the coiledspring 32 in the -casing 31. Movement yofthe actuator-rod will actuate the member 28 and; throughthe intermediacy of "connecting elementshereto-fore set -forth willturn-the shaft 24*in'apdireetion'to 1 cause the latchmembers ;to disengage the *keepers 15. The projectors-.- 13 will 1 immediately cause the; drawers anddoor totswing open so that the automatically returninglatch members-will not engage the'keeper again to lock" the drawers: its-stated before; the latch members are returned to. their J locked position-in the path of movement of the keepersby the coiled spring 32 in the casing Slact-ing upon-the actuator rod-30.
Itwill also be obviousthat whilethe'actu ator rod 30 is beinggmovedtoward' the front of the desk,- the angle lever -40 will pivotand cause the latch, member 43 of the door through the iintermediacy of the link 42 to pivot and disengage the nose of the'keeperfor the door. The latch members 23 and43 be ingautomatically returned to-their locked positions as Swansea lockingmechanism is actuated,'-it willbe obvious thatany ofthe drawers or the door may be closed and locked independently of the;- others and of the master drawer such as-knownin the prior art. When a drawer 'isclosed, it will be seen that the nose 18 of, the keeperthereforwill be impinged by=the-nose of-hit's respective latch member whereby it will be moved toward the body portion. of the keeper so that it may move clear ofthe latch nose, then' spring behind the same to retain the drawer in a lockedposition.

In a drawer; and door-lock, a, keeper comprising an attaching and? supporting body,- anose' pivotally-seollre l t0 i i oilteiend of the body, spring means normally retaining the nose spaced from the body, an inwardly extending arm formed on the free end of the nose and extending toward the body, an angular extension formed on the arm, and a U-shaped guide and retaining member carried by the body for receiving the angular extension.
2. In a drawer and door look, a movable member, a rock shaft disposed in rear of the movable member, a keeper including a body secured to the rear end of the movable I member, a pivoted spring pressed nose carried by the body, a latch carried by the rock shaft, and means for operating the shaft for normally holding the latch in the path of the pivoted nose.
