To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, James F. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, hare invented new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a key fastener, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character wherein on the inserting of the key within the lock it can be fastened therein so as to prevent surreptitious removal of the key only from the side of the lock in which the same is inserted, thus making it impossible to manipulate the lock from the opposite side thereof when the key is engaged therein.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a key fastener wherein the escutcheon plate for a look is of novel form so that the key for manipulating the lock can be readily fastened to the plate after inserting the said key within the lock, thus preventing the loss of the key as well as protecting the lock to avoid the use of a duplicate key or a dummy for a surreptitious'entrance to an inclosure.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a key fastener wherein the key is of novel form and can be readily and easily fastened after its insertion within a lock.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a key fastener which is simple in construction, reliable and etiicient in use, and inexpensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates an elongated escutcheon plate, two of which are ordinarily used in connection with a door lock 13, the latter being of the ordinary well-known construction, and this escutcheon plate A is formed with the usual. keyhole C through which is passed the key into the lock B for manipulating the same.

The key comprises a two-part shank 5, the

. parts of which are swingingly connected to each other through the medium of a hinged joint 6, and on one of these parts is the bit 7 for actuating the lock B, while the other part of the shank is formed with an elongated slot 8 for a purpose presently described.

The escutcheon plate A has cut and struck outwardly therefrom a bail or loop forming a latch receiving keeper 9 adapted to be received by and to pass through the slot 8 in one part of the shank 5 of the key after the latter has been inserted into the lock and the slotted part of the shank 5 has been folded downwardly and inwardly into juxtaposition with relation to the escutcheon plate A so that the said key can be fastened in the lock in a manner presently described.

Pivotally mounted in the slotted part of the shank 5 of the key is a hook-like latch 10, the bill of which is adapted to engage in the keeper 9 when projected through the slot 8 in the swinging part of the shank 5 of the key so that the said key will be locked when inserted in the lock.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
