Description

J. H. PINEO FASTENING DEVICE FOR DOORS March 22, 1932.
Filed Aug. 6, 1930 "If" j-\ J57L72/ Eff/7260.
Patented M... 22; 1932 A NT OFFICE JOHN H. PIN-E0, F BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS ras'rnmne nnvrcn non noons Application filed August 6, 1930. Serial No. 473,308.
This invention relates to a fastening device for doors and particularly to a device for preventing the handles of automobile doors from being actuated'when closed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device which may be attached to the handle of a door and also engage a portion of said door or the handle of an adjacent door. in a manner to prevent the handle or handles from n, being actuated when closed and thereby hold- 7 I ing the door or doors locked in their closed positions. v
The invention consists in a fastening device for doors as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof. 7
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan View of a fastening device for doors embodying myinvention, the device 90 being illustrated in its locked position attached to the handle of an automobile door and engaging the handle for another door in a manner to prevent both of said handles from being operated.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 represents a portion of the body of an automobile, 6 represents a portion of a front door and 7 is a handle for said front door. 8 representsa rear door and 9 is.
a handle for said rear door. The handles 7 and 9 are of well-known construction and are adapted to actuate latches also of well-known construction which are utilized to hold the doors 6 and 8 locked in their closed positions.
The locking device of this invention comprises a hollow casing-10 embodying therein casing members 11 and 12 which are pivoted one to another at 13 and are adapted to abut one against another, when closed, upon aline 14 which extends from a point adjacentto the pivot 13 to one end of the casing where 4.3 an eye portion 15 is formed integral with the casing member 12 and an eye portion 16 is formed integral with the casing member 11. The eye portions 15 and 16 align with each other when the casing members are closed and u said casing members are held locked in their closed positions, at which time they surround the handle 7, by means of a padlock 17 which is inserted inthe eye portion; An opposite end portion 18 of the casing 10 from that .upon which the eyeportions are formed is tubular and has an open end and is adapted to enclose an end portion 19 of the handle 9 in such a manner that when the casing is.
locked in its closed position upon the handle 7, it will be impossible to turn or operate the handle 9. a 4 I Where the automobile is equipped with front doors only, it is necessary thatother means than the rear door handles shall be provided for the purpose of preventing the casing from being turned and a projection 20 'is therefore fastened to the casing member 11 and said projectionis bent so that it may be inserted within the jamb 21 of the front door and said projection also projects into a recess 22 that is provided in the front door in such a manner that when the door is closed and the casing 10 is locked in position upon Y the handle for said door that it' will be 1mpossible to operate the handle. The projection 20 may be eliminated if it is so desired,
when the automobile is provided with both front and rear doors. 1
In utilizing the fastening device of this invention all that is necessary in attaching the same to the handles for a door is to swing the casing member 12 into a position such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby permitting the open end of the casing 10 to be inserted upon the rear door handle 9 and at the same time so positioning the casing that the front door handle 7 will rest within the casing member 11. The upper member 12 is then closed, entirely enclosing the handle 7 within the casingzrand the latter is held closed by means of the padlock 17. In this position it n :11 be impossible foreither of the/handles to be actuated in such a manner that the doors may be opened. The projection 20 may be utilized an additional means for preventing both the front and rear hen-- dies from being rotated and it is evident that where there is no rear door and handle therefor that this projection is necessary. It is furthermore obvious that where there is both a .front and rear door that the engagement of the casing 10 with both of the handles prevents both handles from being operated, in which event it is not necessary to provide the projection upon the casing.
I claim 1. A fastening device ford-oors having, in combination, a casing embodying therein a pair of oppositely disposed members pivoted 1 one to another and adapted to enclose a handle for a door, means to lock said members I closed upon said handle, and a projection u on one of said members to engage the jarnb 0 said door and prevent said casingfrom 15 being turned upon the handle.
2. A fastening device for doors having, in combination, a hollow casing, embodying therein a pair of oppositely disposed members pivoted one to another and adapted to go enclose the handle of a door, and means to lock said members closed upon said handle, a portion of said casing also being adapted to engage another door handle and prevent both of said handles from being turned.
3. A fastening device for doors having, in combination, a hollow casing embodying therein a pair of oppositely disposed members pivoted one to another and provided with eyes therein adapted to align with each other, and means extending through said eyes adapted to lock said members closed upon said handle, a portion of said casing also being adapted to engage another handle and prevent both of said handles from being as turned.
4. A fastening .device for doors having, in combination, a hollow casing embodying therein a pair of oppositely disposed members pivoted one to another and adapted to 0 enclose the handle of a door,.means to lock said members closed upon said handle, and means upon one of said members to engage a pprtion of said door and prevent said casing om being turned upon the handle, a portion of the casing also being adapted to en age another handle and prevent both of the andles from being turned.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN H. PINEO.
