Description

March 7, 1933. BOGGS 1,900,328
AUTOMAT IC DOOR 'I'IGHTENER Filed March 8, 1952 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS.
ROBERT B0655 Patented Mar. 7, 1933 ROBERT BOGGS, OF DALY CITY, CALIFORNIA AUTOMATIC noon TIGHTENER,
Application filed March 8, 1932.. Serial No. 597,583.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic door tighteners.
The principal object of this invention is to provide means whereby the door latch will prevent the door, having myv latch attached thereto, from rattling.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction.
A further object is to produce a device which conforms to ordinary practices 1n 1nstalling latches on doors.
Other objects and advantages w1ll be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing formlng a part of this specification and in which l ke numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2,
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the keeper, and showing the bolt in cross-section when turned in anti-rattling position,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary showing the bolt in retracted position,
Figure 5 is a plan view of the bolt,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper end of the pusher.
The ordinary door latch is usually provided with a square bolt and enters a square opening in the keeper. In some instances, a round bolt is used, and in order 40 to facilitate the entering of this bolt, either round or square, into the keeper opening, the
keeper opening is generally somewhat larger than the bolt. Thisv permits the door to rattle, which is often very annoying.
latch has a bolt, capable of turning as it is projected into the keeper, the result being detail view balance the weight of the handles 33 and to Applicant has devised a latch which may. be combined with a lock if desired, which,
cammingefiect, and thus securely, holding the door against rattling. g
Inthe accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose, of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the
numeral. 5 designates a housing which. is positionedwithin the door 6 in the customary manner, and held in. place by a securing plate 7 thru the medium of the customary screws. At 8 I have shown a keeper plate having a squared opening 9. The parts thus far'correspond to the ordinary latch construction. Within the housing 5, I pivotas at 11, a pusher 12, which pusher has a forked end 13, one portion of the fork being-bifurcated as shown at 14 to receive the reduced portion 16 of a bolt 17 slidably held in a block 18., This bolt has an enlarged head l9 providedwith a cam surf-ace 21-and a fiat surface 22. A groove 23 isformed in thebolt so asv to receive a stationary pin-24 carried in a block 26 secured within the housing. A spring 27 is attached to the housing as at 28 and to the pusher as at 29,
and serves to press the pusher against a cam 31 which is actuated bythe pintle 32 of the handle 33. A spring 34 acts ,to counterassist in returning them to their normal position."
The result of this construction is, that when the handle 33 is moved so as to rotate the pintle 32, the cam 31 will move the pusher about its pivot, thus drawing the bolt into the housing As this occurs, the pin 24 riding in the slot 23 will rotate the headof the bolt from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 .to the position shown in i Fig. 4. When the handle is released, the springs 27 and 34 will return the parts to their normalposition, thus projecting the bolt out of the housing, and if the door he closed, this projection will cause the bolt to rotate in the opening 9 until it binds against the front side of the opening, and
thus holds the door pressed against the door stop and preventsrattling. It is of course obvious that if the door is closed without actuating the handles, the cam surface 21 will move the bolt intothe housing so that the door may be closed, after which the bolt will then be projected into the keeper thru the action of the spring 27 and 31.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1
claim 1. In a latch, a housing, a keeper, said keeper having an opening formed'therein, a bolt slidable in said housing, said bolt having a spiral groove formed therein, a stationary pin positioned in said housing and engaging said groove to cause rotation of said bolt when said bolt is moved with respect to said pin, said bolt being equipped with means for engaging and causing a camming action in the opening of said keeper to cause lateral displacement between said keeper and said housing.
2. In a latch, a housing, a keeper, said keeper having a squared opening formed therein, a bolt slidable in said housing, said bolt having a head provided with a fiattened surface, means for rotating said bolt, said means including a groove formed in said bolt, and a stationary pin mounted in said housing and engaging said groove to cause rotation of said bolt when said bolt ismoved with relation to said pin, whereby said flattened surface will cause a camming action in said squared opening of said keeper to prevent lateral movement between said housing and said keeper.
3. Ina device of the character described, a housing, a bolt slidable in said housing, a pusher engaging a portion of said bolt, a cam for actuating said pusher, means for holding said pusher in engagement with said cam, means for rotating said bolt, said bolt having an enlarged head and a fiat surface formed thereon, a keeper, said keeper having an opening therein, the opening in said keeper being in alignment with said bolt, whereby the flattened surface of said bolt will engage one side of said opening in said keeper when said bolt is projected therethrough and will move out of engagement therewith when said bolt is retracted.
I In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ROBERT BOGGS.
