Description

March 1, 1-927.
J. OSTROSKY, JR., ET AL WINDOW FASTENER- Filed May 6, 1926 Patented Mar. 1, 1927.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Josnrn OSTROSKY, JR., OF DURYEA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND PAUL OSTROSKY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WINDOW FASTENER.
Application filed May 6, 1926.
This invention relates to window fasteners and more particularly to the ordinary rain fastener used to fasten a pair of sliding sashes. 1
The object of the invention is to provide means in a sash fastener for preventing the surreptitious opening of the fastener from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for preventing the operation of the sash fastener from the outside. which may be easily and cheaply installed in the ordinary sash fastener.
Other objects and advantages will herein after appear.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the fastoner.
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 except that the position which the catch and fastener will assume when it is attempted to unfasten the fastener is shown, and
Figure 4 is a detailed view of a slightly modified form.
The device comprises the usual base memher 1, having the fastener 2 pivoted thereon at 3. The base is adapted to be secured to the top of a window sash by securing means passed through openings 4 arranged therein in the usual manner. The fastener 2 is provided with a handle 5 and an eccentric camshaped flange 6. The flange 6 is adapted to engage a keeper (not shown) secured to the bottom of a sash. The movement of the fastener in one direction is limited by a stop 7 pressed up from the top of the base. I-Ieretofore it has been quite easv to open a fastener of the kind above described by simply inserting a putty or other knife or iustrument between the sashes and forcing the fastener to rotate about its pivotto the unlatched position. In order to prevent such tampering, a safety catch 8 is provided. This catch 8 may take the form of an angular shaped arm having one end 9 thereof weighted and the other end provided with a lug 10. The catch is adapted to be pivoted intermediate its ends upon a pin 11. A slit 12 is formed in the front of the base 1 and toward the handle side of the fastener 2. The catch 8 is inserted in this slit so that the Serial No. 107,267.
lug 10 will engage the under surface of the base 1 and the weighted end S) will be in front of the base. i
The pin 11 forming the pivot of the catch may be soldered to the front flange of the base. When in position, an end 13 of the catch will project above the base and be in the path of the fastener, thereby preventing movement of the fastener until the catch is ralsed. It will be apparent that all that is necessary to open the fastener is to raise the welghted end 9 of the catch and rotate the fastener in a counter-clockwise direction. So long as the fastener remains open, the corner 13 of the catch will be held depressed by the under surface thereof. Then it is desired to fasten the windows, the fastener may be rotated in a clockwise direction in the usual manner, and as soon as the front edge thereof has become disengaged from the tip 13 the catch will swing about its pivot by gravity and thus prevent return movement of the fastener until the catch has again been manually raised.
In the modification shown in Figure 4, lugs 14: are formed by bending inwardly the material of the base adjacent the slit 12. The catch may be pivoted between these lugs pn a pivot 15 held in openings formed there- 1n.
Having described in detail an embodiment of the invention, the following claims are herewith appended, it being distinctly un- 'derstood that the invention is susceptible of various modifications and adaptations with in the scope of the said claims.
hat we claim is:
1. A window fastener comprising a base adapted to be mounted on one sash, a member rotatably mounted upon said base and adapted to engage a keeper arranged upon another sash when rotated in one direction, and a gravity actuated lever pivoted on said base to cause one end thereof to slidably engage the bottom of the rotatable member mounted upon another sash, and a gravity actuated catch pivotally mounted in a slit formed in saidhase whereby sald catch W111 prevent rotation of said member when in the keeper engaged position until said catch is manually raised. a
3. A sash fastener comprising a base adapted to be mounted on one sash, a rotat able member arranged upon said base adapted to engage in one position a keeper mounted upon another sash ston means arranged upon said base for iiil'litillf the movement of said member in one direetioin and a gravity actuated catch pivotuliy arranged in a slitformed in the front of said base for preventing movement of said illemher in the other direction, whereby said catch must be manually moved to swing said member out of engagement with the keeper, said catch being adaptedto automatically 11love into operative position when said member iw' in keeper engaged position.
Intestiniony whereof we aliix our signatures.
