This invention relates to locks. It is particularly directed to a lock having bolts movable in transverse directions.
An object of this invention is to provide a compact and rugged lock of the character described, Which shall be relatively inexpensive t0 manufacture, comprise comparatively few and simple parts, be smooth and positive in opera.- tion and withal practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing., Ill designates a door and I I a door jamb. Fixed to the door I0 is a lock I2 embodying the invention and cooperating with the keeper I3 xed to thedoor jamb I I. The door I0 is provided with the usual opening I 4 to receive the ke-y tumbler I5, the same -being attached to a location plate I6 contacting the inside of the door.
Attached to the door and iitted over the location plate is the lock casing I'I having a front wall I8 parallel to the door and an end wall I9 flush'with the edge of said door. The inner surface of the casing wall I8 is kformed with a pair of parallel guides 22 on which there is slidably mounted the main bolt 23 adapted to project `through the opening 24 vin the end wall I9.
Slidably mounted on the main bolt 23 for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said bolt is a slider 25 to which there: is attached a tubular member 25 having a semi-cylindrical portion 26a. at one end. Mounted on the 5 casing wall I8 is a knob 28 to which is attached an arm 29 disposed within the casing and having at the outer end thereof a pin 3i! engaging Within the tubular member 26.
Closing the rear of the casing and xed there- 10 to is a rear cover plate 33 on which there is rotatably mounted a cup-shaped member 34 having a slot 35 through which there extends the key actuated strip 36. Attached-to the member 34 is an arm 38 having at the end thereof a pin 39 l5 received within the semi-cylindrical portion 26a of tubular member 26.
It will now be understood that the main bolt may be projected either by turning the knob 28 or by the key mechanism I5, 33. A torsion spring 20 all wound around a pin ll xed to the slider 25, is provided with outer ends 43 and M engaging the tubular member 25 and a portion of the main bolt, respectively, for retaining the main bolt at the limit of its movement either to projected or 25 retracted position.
The main bolt 23 is preferably of box like formation and provided with a iront w-all 45 substantially contacting the casing wall I8, top and bottom walls @E and di and an end wall d8. The 30 rear of the bolt may be closed by a cover plate 59 screwed to the bolt in any suitable manner. The wall d5 of the main bolt is formed with a raised L-shaped portion Ila `and a depressed corner h. The raised portion 45a has a pair of parallel, 35 spaced, horizontal guides 52 and 53 between which there is slidably mounted a bar or member 5d provided with a pair of spaced pins 55, 56. The pin 55 projects on opposite sides of the bar or member 56%. 40
The walls le and Il of the main bolt are formed adjacent the end wall d8 with aligned openings 53 and 59 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Slidably mounted within said openings and disposed within the main bolt are a pair of aligned, 45 substantially symmetrically disposed, auxiliary bolts 6,3 and 6I. Projecting upwardly from the 1depressed wall portion 35h is a pin 54 and projecting upwardly from the wall portion `55a is a pin 55 aligned with the pin 5d. Pivoted to the 50 pin :5d is a bell crank 3S having a slotted arm 61 engaging the portion of the pin 56 projecting from thebar 54 toward the depressed wall 45h and a second slotted arm 68 received within a slot 69 formed on the inner end of the auxiliary bolt t5 SZ? and engaging a transverse pin lil xed to said bolt and crossing said slot.
Pivoted on the pin 65 is a bell crank Illa having a slotted arm ll receiving the portion oi the pin 5G projecting toward the cover plate 50 of the main bolt, and a second slotted arm l2 receiving a pin E3 xed to the inner end of the other auxiliary bolt 6I.
Pivoted to the wall portion d'a of the main bolt is a bell crank l5 comprising a plate 'l having a longitudinal groove lll. ,Secured to the plate l and closing the groove is a plate 18 formed with a slot 88 adjacent the end of the slot Tl. The plate 'E6 is formed with a slotted arm 8E engaging the pin 55. Pivotally mounted within the groove 'il is a member 85 preferably made of wire stock and having a portion 8S received within said groove. Extending from one end of the portion 36 is an arm 8l projecting through the slot 8@ and disposed substantially at right angles to said portion 86. Extending from the oppo-site end of the portion 86 is a bent back portion 8 parallel to said portion 35 and forming a slot therewith. The portions 8S and 88 are preferably in a plane perpendicular to the arm 3l.
It will now be understood that upon actuating the arm 8l, the member 85 will rotate about the axis of the portion S5. When the arm 31 is moved downwardly, looking at Fig. 4, the bent back portion 88 will be raised and thus be .disengaged from the pin @l on the slider 25. However, when the slider is in the position shown in Fig. 5, movement of the arm 8l upwardly will swing the member about the portion 86 thereof to engage the pin l l l To actuate the arm Sl for rotating the member 85 the rear cover plate 33 is formed with a slot SD. Said slot has a horizont-al portion 9i from which there extends an upwardly inclined portion Q2 terminating with a downwardly curved portion 93. The arm Si projects through the pin 9% in the cover plate and the member 5l) of the main bolt is provided with a notch 5ta to permit the arm El to pass through said slot.
The operation of the lock will now be clear. Beginning with the parts as shown in Fig. 4, the lock is unlocked and the slider 25 is moved upwardly on the main bolt. Upon rotating either the knob 28 or actuating the tumbler I5 with a key to close the lock, the main bolt is projected and the slider moves downwardly with respect to the main bolt to the position shown in Fig. 5. During this movement the pin 6I is not engaged with the portion 88 of the member 35 and the arm 8l moves within the portion 9i of the slot SQ without rotating the member 85. However, when the slider reaches the position shown in Fig. 5, the pin il is located between the portions 86 and 88 of the member 85. Further rotation of the knob or key mechanism will cause the slider to begin to move upwardly, further projecting the horizontal or main bolt. Movement of the arm 8l, however, within the slot portion 5.12 will cause the arm to be swung upwardly for rotating the member 85 sufficiently for the portion 88 thereof to engage the pin lll. At this point the horizontal bolt is suiiiciently projected to bring the auxiliary bolts 53 and Sl within the keeper i3. During further projection of the main bolt, the slider moves upwardly and due to the engagement of the pin M with the member 85 the bell crank 'i5 is rotated in a clock-wise direction, looking at Fig. 4, to move the sliding bar 54 to the right. Such movement of the bar 54 will cause pivotal movement of the bell cranks 66 and ID for projecting the auxiliary bolts 60 and 6l outwardly in opposite directions into engagement with the keeper I3, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. 5
At the outer end of the projecting movement of the horizontal bolt the arm 81 enters the portion 93 of the slot and is moved downwardly to quickly disengage the member 85 from the pin lil. However, when the horizontal bolt is re- 10 tracted the arm 87 moving in the slotted portion 93 in the reverse direction, rotates the member 85 into engagement with the pin 4|. Downward movement of the slider 25 with the pin engaging the member 85 causes rotation of the bell 15 crank 'l5 in a counter-clockwise direction for retracting the auxiliary bolts 60 and 6l during the initial retracting movement of the main bolt. After the auxiliary bolts have been retracted, the member 85 is disengaged from the pin 4| due 20 to movement of the arm 8l into the slot portion 92. During the remainder of the retraction of the main or horizontal bolt, the bell crank l5 does not move and the auxiliary bolts 60 and 5I likewise do not move but are carried with the main 25 bolt.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. 30.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter Aherein set forth or shown in the accompaniyng 35 drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidably 4o mounted therein, means for projecting the main bolt, comprising a slider slidably mounted on the main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a member rotatable on the casing and pivotally engaging said 45 slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a bai` slidably mounted on said main bolt for longitudinal movement with respect thereto a bell crank pivoted to 50 said main bolt and having arms engaging said auxiliary bolt and said bar, and a second bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and having an arm engaging said bar, and means for engaging said second bell crank with said slider.

In a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projecting the main bolt, comprising a slider slidably mounted on the main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a member ro- 60l tatable on the casing and pivotally engaging said slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a bar slidably mounted on said main bolt for longitudinal move- '65- ment with respect thereto, a bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and having arms engaging said auxiliary bolt and said bar, and a second bell crank -pivoted to said main bolt and having an arm engaging said bar, means on said second 703 bell crank adapted to engage said slider, a rear cover plate on said casing, and means on said rear cover plate for controlling said last mentioned means.

In a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidablymounted therein, means for projecting the main bolt, comprising a slider slidably mounted on the main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a member rotatable on the casing and pivotally engaging said slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of. the main bolt, a bar slidably mounted on said main bolt for longitudinal movement With respect thereto, a bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and having arms engaging said auxiliary bolt and said bar, and a second bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and having an arm engaging said bar, means on said second bell crank adapted to engage said slider, a rear cover plate on said casing provided With a slot, and said last mentioned means comprising a member rotatably mounted on said second bell crank and having an arm engaging Within said slot and a bent back portion adapted to engage said slider.

In a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projecting said main bolt comprising a slider mounted on said main bolt for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said main bolt, a member rotatably mounted on said casing and having an arm pivoted to said slider, a pin on said slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of sai-d main bolt, and means for moving said auxiliary bolt during movement of said main bolt, said means comprising a member on said main bolt and operatively connected to said auxiliary bolt and having a portion adapted to disengageably engage said pin.
5. ln a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projecting said main bolt comprising a slider mounted on said main bolt for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said main bolt, a member rotatably mounted on said casing and having an arm pivoted to said slider, a pin on said slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said main bolt, and means for moving said auxiliary bolt during movement of said main bolt, said means comprising a bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and operatively connected to said auxiliary bolt, a member rotatably mounted on said bell crank and having a portion-` adapted to disengageably engage said pin.

In a lock, a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projecting said main bolt, comprising a slider mounted on said main bolt for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said main bolt, a member rotatably mounted on said casing and having an arm pivoted to said slider, a pin fixed to said slider, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted on said main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said main bolt, and means for moving said auxiliary bolt during movement of 5 said main bolt, said means comprising a bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and operatively connected to said auxiliary bolt, a member rotatably mounted on said bell crank and having a portion adapted to disengageably engage said pin, and means ixed with respect to said casing for controlling the movement of said rotatable member.

In combination, a lock comprising a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projectingsaid main bolt, a pair of auxiliary bolts slidably mounted on the main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a bar slidably mounted on said main bolt for longitudinal movement With respect thereto, and a pair of bell cranks pivoted to said main bolt on opposite sides of said bar, each having an arm engaging the bar and an arm engaging one of the auxiliary bolts, means for causing sliding movement of said bar during projection of said main bolt for moving said auxiliary bolts in opposite directions, said means comprising another bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and engaging said sliding bar, and means on said last mentioned bell crank coacting with said projecting means for rotating said last mentioned bell crank during a portion only of the -projecting movement of said main bolt.

In combination, a lock comprising a casing, a main bolt slidably mounted therein, means for projecting said main bolt, a pair of auxiliary bolts slidably mounted on the main bolt for movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the main bolt, a bar slidably mounted on said main bolt for longitudinal movement with respect thereto, a pair of bell cranks pivoted to said main bolt on opposite sides of said bar each having an arm engaging the bar and an arm engaging one of the auxiliary bolts, means for causing sliding movement of said bar during projection of said main bolt for moving said auxiliary bolts in an opposite direction, said means comprising another bell crank pivoted to said main bolt and engaging said sli-ding bar, means on said last mentioned bell crank coacting with said projecting means for rotating said last mentioned bell crank during a portion only of the projecting movement of said main bolt, a rear cover plate on said casing, and means on said cover plate for controlling movement of said last mentioned bell crank.
