7 This invention relates to doors for thresholds of houses or residences, and the object of the invention is to provide a door having a guard which is auxiliary tothe door and which will si be carried by the door, under ordinary circumstances, but in which provision is made for holding the guarding structural portion of the door in a closed position while the door proper is opened to expose a caller at the house. t is luzwell known that unscrupulous persons summon the occupants of a house by an alarm at the door, either through the operation of the bell or knocker usually present at the doors of houses, and when the door is opened, they accost or asl msault the occupant and proceed to rob or otherwise damage the property or person of the occupant of the house.

' It is an object, therefore, of this invention to provide a guard which may be in the nature of a grill or other ornamental structure which, under ordinary conditions, opens and closes with the door or, in other words, itis carried by the door and hinged thereto, preferably at the butt end of the door, and the object of this invention gis to provide locking means associated with the door frame and the guard or grill which, for the purpose of convenience in the description, will be hereinafter referred to as a guard, although of course it may be otherwise designated. 30,7, It is a further object of the invention to provide novel means associated with the guard and door frame which will effect an interlocking connection between the two that will prove effective to hold the guard against movement while the Tia i dOOI is being opened or while it is in an open position, the said interlocking connection being manipulatable from the interior of the house so that when the guard is to be made effective, the retaining instrumentalities may be :ut' actuated to perform the function. It is the purpose-of the inventor furthermore to soarrange the guard retaining instrumentalities that they will not be conspicuous, nor will they be accessible from the exterior of the structure.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide auxiliary guard retaining means which will serve to brace the guard and prevent displacement of the guard by force.

It is'furthermore an object of the invention to bomprovide these auxiliary retaining instrumentalities so that they perform their functions automatically as the door is opened while the guard is locked against movement.

It isa still further object of this invention to 55. provide a guard of the character indicated which may be of any ornamental design; preferably it should not be a solid structure. Many designs of grill work would be appropriate for the purpose, but since the exact arrangement of the guarding structure is not material to the effective operation of the door and guard, it is believed unnecessary to describe the same in detail.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth. and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which:

Figure 1 illustrates a View in elevation, showing the guard in place when the door is opened, the door being also shown in dotted lines, open on the plane of the guard;

Figure 2 illustrates a horizontal sectional view thereof, omitting the dotted line position of the door;

In these drawings Ill denotes a door frame and H a conventional type of door, having the usual butt hinges l2, by which the door is mounted in the frame. The door may be provided with the usual lock and latch operating knobs, such as It, of any appropriate embodiment.

In the present embodiment of the invention, each of the hinge members i2 is provided with a pintle M which may be placed at different locations with respect to the width of the door, depending upon the amount of thrust or movement which is to be imparted to the guard. The guard l5'is preferably of grill-like construction and preferably of ornamental design, but the in- 3 1 0? does not wish to be limited with respect to this feature of his invention, since the design may be changed to suit particular requirements as to its efficiency in guarding the structure or for ornamental purposes. The guard has hinges, such as I6, oscillatable on the pintle l4 and, as shown, the hinges are angular in order that one portion thereof will lie parallel to the butt end of the door when it is in closed position, but the arrangement is such that when the door is opened, that portion of the hingewhich is connected to the guard moves the guard edgewise so that the margin of the guard remote from the hinge is moved toward the door frame Ill. The guard is provided with pins or projections l7 and when the door and guard are secured together so that they swing in unison, the ends of these pins will clear the door'frame. In order that the guard and door may be caused to swing with the door carrying the guard, the door is provided with a latch or latches [8, each of which engages a pin l'l. However, when the door is opened and the guard is retained against movement, as will presently appear, the latch is withdrawn from the pin and the door swings to open or closed position without carrying the guard with it.

The door frame is provided with a plurality of sockets having bushings l9 therein, into which the pins I? are thrust when the guard is held closed and the door is being opened; this movement being occasioned by the manner in which the hinge I6 is mounted on the hinge l2. As has been stated, under normal conditions, the door and guard will swing together, but when it is desired that the guard shall remain closed, means are provided for arresting or holding the guard against movement while the door is being swung open and this, in the presentembodiment of the invention, is accomplished by the use of an apertured bolt 20 slidable in a thimble or housing 2| located in the door frame. The bolt 20 is, as stated, slidable in the thimble and is adapted to have its outer end thrust beyond the edge of the door frame into engagement with one of the pins l1 and this initial movement retains the guard while the door is being swung open, and during the movement of the door to its open position, the guard is furthermore thrust so that its pins enter the sockets of the door frame and thus the guard cannot be opened.

The bolt 2Q is moved in the housing 2| by means of the racks 22 and pinion 23, which latter is rotatable transversely of the door frame. In mounting the bolt in the housing, the racks 22 are in position opposite the

24 and 25 of the housing and the pinion, which is preferably in the nature of a toothed rod or bolt, is rotatable in the

apertures

24 and 25 with the teeth of the pinion engaging the teeth of the rack. When, therefore, an operator wishes to project the bolt beyond the outer end of the housing, the pinion is turned until the bolt projects to embrace one of the pins H to an extent which will prevent the guard from moving with the door and thereafter, as the door is opened, the pins carried by the guard-are further thrust into their sockets or seats located in the door frame.

It follows from the foregoing that if a person within a house is summoned to the door and he wants to guard against unlawful entrance by the person outside, he may operate the handle 26 on the pinion within the guarded structure and thus move the bolt 20 outwardly until it engages one of the pins I! and then by opening the door the guard is moved edgewise, as stated, so that all of the pins of the guard are moved into appropriate seats in the door frame and the guard cannot therefore be opened. Any appropriate handle or operating device may be substituted 5 for the handle 26 and it may be in the nature of a key, lever or the like. It is obvious, furthermore, that the position of the pintle M with respect to the width of the door will determine the degree of movement imparted to the guard 10 in moving it edgewise to effect a lodgment of the pins in the appropriate seats in the door frame.

I claim:

1. A combined door and guard comprising a 15 door hingedly mounted in a door frame, a guard, means for hinging the guard to the door whereby swinging movement of the door imparts motion to the guard edgewise of said guard, means by which the guard and door are held to be moved go together, means for holding the guard from movement with the door under certain conditions, and means on the guard coacting with the door frame for retaining the guard stationary when the door is moved to open position. 25

2. A combined door and guard comprising a door having its butt edge hinged to a door frame,

a guard hinged on the door near its butt edge and operative to thrust the guard edgewise when the door is opened and means associated with 30 the door frame and the guard to produce an interlocking engagement of the two, whereby the guard is held closed when the door is opened.

3. A combined door and guard comprising a door having its butt edge hinged to a door frame, 35 a guard having hinges whereby the said guard is hinged on the door, the said hinges having portions at angles to those portions secured to the guard, hinge memberson the door coacting with the hinges of the guard, the saidhinge members 4 being operative to move the hinges of the guard edgewise of the guard whereby the said guard is thrust edgewise with relation to the door frame, members on the guard at the edge remote from the hinges, a slidable member carried by the door 45 frame manually movable to engage one of the members of the guard to hold it when the door is opened, and means associated with the door frame into engagement with which other memberson the guard are thrust during edgewise 5 movement of the guard.

4. A combined door and guard comprising a door having its butt edge hinged to a door frame,

a guard having hinges connected to the door whereby the said guard is hinged on the door, 55 said hinges each comprising a portion secured to the door and a portion secured to the guard and said hinges having portions at angles to those portions. secured to the guard, the said portions of the hinges being operative to move the hinges 60 of the guard edgewise of the guard whereby the said guard is thrust edgewise with relation to the door frame, a guide at the edge of the door frame, a member slidable therein, manually operated means for projecting and retracting the same, and a projection on the guard into and out of engagement with which the said member is moved for holding the guard stationary or releasing the same. 70

5. A combined door and guard comprising a door hingedly mounted in a door frame, a guard, means for hinging the guard to the door whereby swinging movement of the door imparts motion to the guard edgewise of said guard, means by 7 which the guard and door are held to be moved together, means for holding the guard from movement with the door under certain conditions, means on the guard coacting with the door frame for retaining the guard stationary when the door is moved to open position, and means carried by the guard interengaging the door frame when the said guard is moved edgewise.

6. A combined door and guard comprising a door having its butt edge hinged to a door frame,

a guard hinged on the door and operative to thrust the guard edgewise when the door is opened, means associated with the door frame and the guard to produce an interlocking engagement of the two, whereby the guard is held closed when the door is opened, and interengaging members on the guard and door frame operative when the guard is moved edgewise to hold the guard stationary.
