Patented Oct. 14, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,613,523 i Loon MECHANISM FOR wnvnow LATCHES I Neil 0.,Holmsten, New Rochelle, N. Y. Application April 23, 1949, Serial Ha 89,184
This invention relates generally to latching means for swinging windows or glass doors. More specifically, the invention relates to a looking means to be used in conjunction with a pivoted latch, such as is used on French windows.
The invention is especially designed for application to standard type pivoted latche which are already in use for holding swinging windows and doors closed. Latches of this type are attached to the inside of a window or door and are quite effective for holding them closed, but it is a relatively simple matter for an unauthorized person to release the latch and open the window, or door, to which it is applied, to gain entrance to a building. It is Only necessary to break a window pane or remove a small section thereof, or out a small hole through a door, and then reach in from the outside and release the latch after which the window or door may be opened.
This invention, as disclosed herein, is adapted to be applied to either single or double swinging or sliding windows or doors and comprises a pivoted hasp or like member which is pivotally connected to a window or door jamb and is adapted to be swung into or out of engagement with a pivoted latching member carried by a window or door. A key-operated or combination locking means is provided to lock the hasp in engagement with the latching member when the latching member is in latching position and thus prevent releasing of the latching member by unauthorized persons.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved locking mechanism for application to swinging windows or doors to be used in conjunction with standard type latching means thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking mechanism of this type, which is of simple construction, efficient in operation and which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and more limited objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of my invention showing it applied to a French window, with the various parts in looking position;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the locking mechanism in unlocked position;
1 Claim. (Cl. 741-89 Fig. 5.is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 ofFigl; Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section taken on the line l'! of Fig. 6.
In the drawings, I have shown a pair of French windows which are adapted to close against a jamb 66. Each of the windows 65 includes a frame 6'! having a pane of glass 68 suitably mounted therein. A pivoted latching member 69 is secured to a widened portion ll] of the frame 61 of each of the windows 65. The latching mem here 69 each comprise a hub H, which is pivotally mounted upon a bolt or stud 12 which is secured to and extends outwardly from the portion 10 of the frame 61, a latching arm 13, and an operating handle 14. In latching position, the latching arm 73 extends laterally from the hub ll into engagement with the inner face of th jamb 66, and the operating arm 14 extends inwardly and downwardly from the hub I.
In order to retain the latching members 69 in latching position, I provide a locking mechanism, generally indicated by the numeral l5, which includes a keeper 16 which is adapted to engage the arms 13 when they are in latching position and hold them against movement. The keeper [6 is secured to or may be formed integral with a lever T! which is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 18 in a clevis l9 which is secured within a casing by screws 8i. The casing 80 consists of a base 82, a cover 83 and a rectangular frame 84, which are all rigidly secured together by screws 85. The casing 80 is rigidly secured to the jamb 66 by non-removable screws or rivets 86 which extend through suitable apertures in extension 8'! of the base 82. A cylinder lock 88 is secured to the cover 83 by a nut 89 and extends into the casing 80. The lock 88 has a key-operated rotary plug 90 to which is secured a cam member 9| by a nut 93. The cam member 9| has a cam track 94 thereon which engages the inner end 95 of the lever H. A spring 96 maintains the end 95 of the lever ll against the cam track 94 as the cam 9| is rotated by the key-operated rotary plug 90. When the high part 9'! of the cam track 94 engages the inner end 95 of the lever 17, the keeper I6 is moved inwardly against the jamb 86 and envelops the latching arms 13 which prevents them from being moved out of engagement with the jamb 66, as is shown in Fig. 3. When the cam 9i has been rotated to the position shown in Fig. 4, the end 95 of the lever ll is in engagement with the low part 98 of the cam track 94, and the keeper T6 is swung inwardly away from the jamb 66 releasing the latching arms 13 so that they can be swung out of engagement with the jamb 66 to release the windows so that they can be opened.
From the foregoing it will be apparent to those skilled in this art that I have provided a, very simple and efficient means for accomplishing the objects of my invention.
It is.to .be .understood that.I..am not restricted to the specific construction .of the embodiment shown and described herein, as variou changes may be made thereto within the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A latching mechanism for securing, a window frame closed against a jamb wherein 'a'latching arm is pivotally mounted onsaid window frame to be moved in a plane parallel to said jamb into and out of engagement with said jambsaid latching mechanism comprising a casing to be mountedon said jamb, a catch pivotallymounted in said casing for movement in a plane' normal to said =jamb to engage said latching .arm when depressed toward said jamb to holdnsaid. latching arm 4 against movement, a cylinder lock in said casing having a rotary plug, a rotary cam secured to said plug, said cam engaging said catch and operative to hold said catch in engagement with said latching arm, and spring means operative to Withdraw said catch from engagement with said latching arm when released by said cam.
