Description

Patented June 28, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN W. JOHNSTON, OF ROSEDALE, ALBERTA, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 BERTON A. MCEWEN, OF DRUMHELLER, CANADA.
LATCH.
Application filed March 5, 1925.
This invention relat-es to improvements in latches for doors and other hinged members, an object being to provide a latch which will securely hold a doorin closed position and which will be released simultaneously with either the pushing or pulling. action when opening the door.
Another obj ect of the invention is the prof vision of a latch as above stated which is simple in construction, ethcientk in use and which may be adapted for use upon screen doors, public halls, theaters and so forth.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the latch in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the same partly-broken away.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of p the keeper.
Figure 4y is a sectional view showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a door, for example a screen door, the frame of the door being provided with a stop 11 against which the free edge of the door engages to limit swinging movement in one direction.
Secured to the door by screw-s 12 or simi-V lar fastening devices is a bracket 13. This bracket is provided vwith an offset portion or extension 14 which forms a latching shoulder which is adapted to engage a keeper plate 15. One end of the plate 15 is secured to the door frame by lscrews or other fastening devices 16 and `the opposite end of the plate is relatively offset and is spaced from the frame. The plate is provided with an opening so as to form a shoulder' 17 at one edge of the opening, the latching shoulder 14 of the bracket 13 engaging this shoulder 17 and when so engaged will prevent outward swinging movement of the door.
Pivo-tally secured at one end of the bracket 13 as indicated at 18 is a latch bar 19. In Figures 1 and 2, this bar is substantially L-shaped and is positioned so that oneof its arms 2O will engage the free end of the Serial No. 13,358.
keeper plate and move the latter out of the path of the latching shoulder 14. To accomplish this the outer end of the latch bar 19 has extending therethrough the shankv of a knob 21, the inner end of this shank being secured to the Ishank 22 of a knob 23. The knob 23 is located upon the outside of the door and the shank 22 extends lthrough the door and through a plate 24 secured uponv said door.
A pull upon the knob 23 for the purpose of pulling the door 10 outward,-will inove the latch bar 19 pivotally and cause the arm 2O of the said bar to engage the free end of the keeper plate 15 so as to move theshoulder 17 of said pla-te out of the path of the latching shoulder 14 as previously mentioned. A push upon the knob 21` from the inside of the door will accomplish the same function so that the act of opening the door will at the .same time release the latch. When closing the door the latching shoulder will engagethe shoulder 17 of the keeper late and the latter will engage vthe arm 20 of the latch bar 19 so as to properly position the vsaid bar.
For the purpose of preventing release of the latch from the outside of the door, when desired, there is pivotally secured to the latch bar 19 as shown at 25, a locking finger 26. When the free end of this finger is positioned against the bar as shown yby the dotted lines in lFigure 1, the latch bar will be held against pivotal movement.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 4, the construction is the same except that the latch bar has its long arm 27 extended substantially across the width of the door and its free end slidingly engaging the inner face of the door. The free end of the latch bar is supported within a guide 28. By pushing upon the arm 27 of the latch bar at any point throughout its length, the said bar will be moved pivotally to actuate the latch in the manner previously described. In this form of the invention the door could not be opened from the outside. The latch shown in Figure 4 is especially adapted for use upon the doors of small theaters, halls or other places of public gathering.
The invention is susceptible of various other changes in its form, proportion-s and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed iszl. The combination with a hinged door, of a bracket carried thereby, an extension provided upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keeper mounted in the path of movement of and engagingthe extension, a pivoted bar carried by the bracket and including an offset end portion arranged ,to engage the keeper whereby when said bar is moved the bracket will be released, and means vcarried by the bar `tor holding the latter against pivotal movement.
2. rlhe combination with a hinged door, otl a bracket carried thereby, l.an extension provided upon the bracket, a relativelystationary yieldable keeper mounted `in the path of movement ot the extension, said` keeper comprising` a platehaving anopening therein and a tree opposite end adapted 'to be engaged by the bracket extension, a
pivoted bar carried by the bracket `and including an oli'set end portion arranged vto engage the opposite end ot the lkeeper plate whereby when said bar is moved the bracket will be released, and means carried by the bar for holding the latter `against pivotal movement.
3. The combination with a. hinged door, of a bracket carried thereby, an extension upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keeper mounted in the path of and engaging the extension, a bar pivotally secured to the bracket, and including an ottset end portion arranged to engage the keeper whereby the latter may be moved to release the bracket and means whereby the bar may be actuated, and means carriedby the bar for `holding the latter against pivotal L.mov-ement.
et. The combination with a hingedydoor, of a Abracket carried thereby, an extension upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keeper mounted in the lpath ,of and engaging the extension, a bar pivotally secured to `the bracket, and including an ot'set end portion arranged to engage the keeper whereby the latter may be moved to release the ,bracket the bar whereby the latter may be moved pivotally, and means carried by the bar or holdinotlie latter ac'ainst livotal movement.
5. The combination with a` hinged door, ot a bracket carried thereby, an extension upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keepernmounted Yin ythe path of and engaging-` the extension, a bar pivotally secured to the bracket, and including an ott'set end portion arranged to engage the keeper whereby the latter may be moved to release the bracket, means located `upon opposite sides o't the hinged door and operatively associated with the bar whereby the llatter may be moved pivotally and means whereby the. bar may `be rheld .against lpivotal Vmovement, and means carried the bar for holding .the latter against vpivotal movement.
.6. The combinationwith avhinged door, ot a bracket carried thereby, an extension upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keeper mounted in the path of and engaging the extension, a bar `pivotally secured to theV bracket, means carried by the bar and engaging the keeper' whereby the. latter may be moved to release the bracket, Vmeans lo-v cated upon opposite sides of the ,hinged door and operatively associated With .the bar whereby the latter 'may sbe moved pivotally and a. locking finger pivotally secured to the bar and engageable with .the ,door whereby the bar may be held Vagainst pivotal movement.
7. The vcombination with a hinged door,
of a bracket Acarried thereby, an extension upon the bracket, a relatively yieldable keeper mounted lin the path of and engaging the extension, a bar pi-voted on said bracket, and including an offset end .por-A tion arranged to engage the keepery whereby the latter may be moved to Arelease l.the bracket, and vrmeans slidably Imounted y.on the door and opera-ble from either side thereof, andl connected with said bar tor ,moving the latter pivotally.
In testimony whereof I allix vmy signature.
