This invention relates to secret door locks. One object of the invention is to provide a door and jamb, or the equivalent, having improved association with a lock whereby the latter is operated through the clearance space between the door and the j amb.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, in-
cluding an improved secret door lock opera-v tive through the clearance space between the door and the jamb.
Another object of the invention is to fnrnish an improved lock of the type mentioned in which a key inserted through Vthe space I5 between the door and the jamb operates the lock with a movement of the key in a prede-v termined direction or plane according to the narrowness or other characteristics of the said space.
Another object of the invention is to construct a device of the nature set forth having a key operated tumbler means in improved association with the lock to operate theA latter by a translational movement of the tumbler' means. Another object of the invention is the provision of a locking device including an improved tumbler means adapted to be locked in the open as well as the closed position of the lock.
A. further object of the invention -is to provide an improved lock having relatively few and simple parts, and which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, compact, and reliable and efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the spec-ification proceeds.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawings, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.
Generally described, the invention provides a door and jamb and a lock so arranged that the latter is concealed or adapted to be concealed and may be operated through a small space or slot. One possible embodiment of the invention includes the lock operated through the clearance space between the door and the jamb. The invention may be applied not only to doors, but also to windows, and generally to any types of closures. According to this invention, the operator passes a key or other tool through the clearance space mentioned, and causes said key to enter and operate the lock. The latter may include any suitable type of bolt or engagement and any desired mechanism for actuating the bolt. The movement of the key may be in the plane of the slot or clearance space, longitudinally, laterally, or both. A key operated tumbler means may be used for movement in the desired direction on insertion of the proper key, and the said movement may be along the plane referred to. For instance, the tumbler means may be mounted for oscillation, and may be so constructed that it can be oscillated only by the proper key. The tumbler means thereupon retracts the bolt. The tumbler means may be so arranged that it can be locked in open position to avoid accidental locking of the ook.
It will be obvious that the invention can be used with sliding as well as with swinging doors.
Referring in detail to the drawings, denotes a device embodying the invention. The same may include a door 21, a jamb 22, a strike 23, and a lock casing 24. While the latter is shown mounted in the jamb, andthe strike in the door, the location of the parts may also be reversed. In the embodiment shown, the lock casing is set into a recess in the jamb and is mounted to project at 26 from the face 27 of the jamb. The door 2l has a recess 28 to receive the projecting portion of the lock casing, the recess 28, however, being spaced from the key operating side, or outside. face 29 of the door. Accordingly the adjacent outside edges of the door and amb are of uniform character and provide a uniform clearance f space 30, which is analogous to a slot.
The lock casing 24 has a plate 3l whereby it is secured to the jainb by screws 32. The strike 23 may be set into the door and secured by screws 33. The strike has an open ing 34 and the door a communicating recess 35, whereby a bolt 36 of the lock casing is engaged.
It will now be seen that all parts of the lock are disposed in spaced relation from the outside of the door, and substantially concealed, as the clearance space is usually quite narrow, particularly in well constructed buildings. The portion of the lock remote from the face 29 of the door may, of course, be accessible from the inner side 37 of the door for manipulation by a knob, or the like, according to the well known practice.
The lock casing has a supporting plate therein which extends the full length and breadth of the casing, being fitted aetween the upper and lower and the side walls of the casing. The said supporting plate 38 is in proximity to the cover platez Spacing` the supporting plate from the cover plate is a flange 39 at one side of the casing and a flange 40 at the top thereof. The lower portion 41 of the supporting plate 38 is of a thickness equal to said flanges. Thus recess 42 is provided between the parts 40, 4l for housing with the cover plate 3l a key operated tumbler 43 hereinafter described.
Secured to the portion 4l of the plate 38 is a stationary sleeve 44 which extends to the rear wall 45 of the lock Sliding ly disposed in said sleeve is a bolt 46 extending outward through an opening 4T in the cover plate 3l. The said bolt has a central slot 48 formed in the rear portion, while the sleeve has a registering slot 49 in the en tire length thereof. Intersecting the bolt slot is a pin 50.
In the upper part of the lock casing is a stationary plate 5l mounted in any suitable manner. The plate 5l has alined elongated ears 52, 52, and 54 formed therein, extending through which are bearing pins 55 and 550,. Y
Taking around the pin 55 is a coil spring 56 having a portion 57 extending downward to bear on the pin 50 to tend to projectbolt. Journaled on the pin p'5a between the ears 53, 54 is a lever 58 which extends into the bolt slot 48 in advance of the pin 50. The said lever 58 has stop contact at 59 with the plate 38 in the projected position of the bolt.
Connected to the sleeve 44 is a portion. 60 in which is secured one end of a stationary rod or shaft 6l, the upper end when-cf is fixed at 62 in the plate 5l. Journaled on the shaft 6l is a sleeve 63 carrying spaced fingers 64, 65. The latter are of different characteristics and may also be angularljf spaced to each other. rlhe upper finger 64 is actuated by the key operated tumbler means 43 as hereinafter set forth to turn the sleeve` and thus to cause the lower finger 65 'to move the lever 58, to act on the pin 56 and retract the bolt. Engagement between the lever 58 and the linger 65 may he facilitated by the recessed portion 66 in said lever.
Formed in the plate. 38 is an opening 67 through which extends the linger 64 into the recess 42, the opening being sufliciently large plate 38, the finger l64 is moved to cause re-V traction of the bolt.l
The casing member 68 has fixed therein a portion 73 Lproviding an opening 74 for a key 75. The latter may consist of ya thin strip of metal of any desired conformation. Along one side edge of the key are indentations 76 for registering with tumblers 77 slidingly mounted in the portion 73. A pin 7 8y serves to limit the insertion of the key into the registering relation by co-operation with a portion 79 of the key.
Mounted in the casing member 43 is a slide member 80 which is movable along the portion 73. Said slide member has a plurality of bores housing expansion coil springs 81 and the pins 82 acted on by the springs. In.
the locked position of the tumbler means as shown in F ig. l1, the slide member 80 abuts a side wall of the lock casing and prevents pivotal movement of the tumbler means. On insertion of the proper key 7 5, the slide memi ber is released so that it is slidable relatively toward the right to permitthe tumbler means to be oscillated counterclockwise to open the lock.
The key 75 is passed through the clearance space 30 between the door and jamb, and
thence throughthe opening 83 in the lock casing, which key opening is in registry with the i space 30. Thus the lock vis concealed and operative only in a secret manner.
In Figs. 9 to 15 is shown modification of the invention including a lock casing 85 mounted in a ljamb 86, and a strike 87 in a door.88. The lock casing has an opening 89 registeringwith the clearance space 90 between the door and the jamb but spaced there# from for concealment. A key 91fis insert-able into said opening for operating the lock.`
Mounted in the lock casingr is a tumbler.
means 92 including a portion 93 pivotally -mounted at 94. The portion 93 has a slot 9a to receive the key 91. An end 96 of the portion 93 is of fan tail shape and has tumblers 97 housed in bores 98 in a radial. relation to the pivot 94. Coacting with the tumblers is a fixed member 99 having pins 100, actuated by springs 101, all in symmetrical radial relation to the pivot 93.`
It will be noted that the member` 99 has more pins 100 than there are tumblers.l This permits the tumbler means 92 to be locked in the open as well-as inthe closed position rof the lock as will now be described.
The key 91 has suitablerecesses 102 on" an end thereof to aecommodatethe tumblers and to radially actuate the same,`for which purposesaid recesses may havethe requisite design and clearance, and with the tumblers l properly related and spaced. In Fig. v12, the tumbler means is shown in an intermediate position. When the bores 98 registerwith any corresponding number ofthe pins 100, the means 92 is locked against pivotal movement of the member 93. It is thus necessary to insert the key and move the samey along the plane ofthe key slot A89, thus pivotally moving the'member 93 to open or close the lock.
Stopqpins .103 may limit the movement of AnyV suitable mechanism.
The said arm engages the member 93, whereby, on clockwise movement of the latter, the bolt 107 is moved/upward to open the lock.
Secured over the'bolt 107 is a cover 115,l which is fastened in-place by screws 116 that take into bosses 117 in rthe plate 104. The latter may be secured to the lockcasing in any suitable manner. The cover affords Space at 118 for the bolt 107.
To secure the lock casing to the'jamb, the plate 1'04 may have a ange 118 receiving screws 119.
A strike 87 may consist of a plate having an opening 120 for receiving the bolt 107, there being a recess 121 in the door to accommodate the head of the bolt. .The bolt thus acts in a direction parallel to the key. and at right angles to the plane of the door.
In Figs. 16 to 19 is shown a further modification'of the invention which-may embody all of the. advantages and principles hereinbefore described, and isV nevertheless of lv ery simpley construction. This lock 122 has a casing 123.

The latter is pivoted at 126 on a plate 127 which is intermediate the side walls of the y pivot 131. At its upper part, the means 129 carries la pin 132 movable along a slot 133k CTI tive not in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the following claims. v
We claim:
1. A locking device adapted to act between a door and a jamb, said locking device including a casing, a strike, interengaging means therefor, actuating means for the interengaging means, said actuating means havr ing key operated tumbler means registering with the clearance space between the door and the j amb, and movably operative along the plane thereof, said tumbler means being disposed wholly within said casing, said casing having a key guiding slot along the said plane and in registry with said tumbler means.
2. A locking device for a door and j amb, said device having key operated tumbler means, said tumbler means being disposed for accessibility through the clearance space between the door and the jamb, and with the axis of the tumbler means at an angle to the plane of the door, said tumbler means being mounted for oscillation along the plane of said clearance space to open or close the device.
3. A locking device for a door and jamb, said device including a bolt, mechanism to 'actuate the bolt, said mechanism including a portion registering with the clearance space between the door and jamb and swingable along the plane thereof so as to be operative by a means insertable into said clearance 5 space and movable longitudinally ofthe space to actuate said portion for opening or closing the' lock.

3,1 and mechanism to actuate the bolt, said mechanism including movable tumbler means communicating with the space between the door and jamb, said tumbler means being operative by a key to open or close the lock by movement of the key in the general direction of the plane of the door.
5. A locking device for interengaging a doo and jamb, said device including a bolt, and mechanism to actuate the bolt, said mechanism including an oscillatory key operated tumbler means communicating with the space between the door and the jamb, said tumbler means being operative by a key insertable through said space, said tumbler means being Tconstructed to open or close the lock by a swinging movement of the key along the plane of: said space.
6. A locking device for interengaging a door and a jamb, said device being key operated from a side of the door, said device including a bolt, an actuating mechanism for the same, said mechanism having a key operated tumbler means, said tumbler means being spaced from said side of the door, said 'tumbler means registering with a space between the door and the j amb and being movable along the plane of the space.
7 A concealed locking device adapted to lock a door to a jamb, said door and jamb having a clearance space therebetween, the locking device being spaced from a face of the door, the door and jamb being adapted to conceal the locking device, said locking device including a casing, a strike, a bolt, and mechanism to actuate the same, said mechanism having a key operated tumbler means communicating with the clearance space between the door and jamb and being concealed said tumbler means being constructed to receive a key inserted into said space, said tumbler means being swingably movable by the key along a plane parallel to said clearance space to actuate the mechanism for opening or closing the lock.
9. A lock for a plurality of relatively movable closure members having an open space therebetween, said lock including a casing mounted on one of the members and a strike on the other member, the casing having a portion projecting into said space at a point spaced from the outside of the members, and key operated tumbler means in said portion in communication with said space.
10. A lock for a plurality of relatively movable members having closure coaction along a plane, said members having therebetween a space at an angle to said plane, the lock including a casing and a strike mounted on respective members, the member having the strike being provided with a recess communicating with said members and spaced from the outside of the members, the strike being positioned in the recess, the casing extending across said space and into the recess, the lock mechanism in the casing, said mechanism being so arranged as to be actuable through the said space.
11. A concealed lock for locking a door to a jamb, said door and jamb having a clearance space therebetween at an angle to the plane of 'the door, the lock being spaced from a face of the door, the door and jamb being adapted to conceal the lock, said lock including a casing, a strike, a bolt, means to actuate the same, and a key operated tumbler means for the actuating means, said tumbler means being so disposed as to receive the key through the said clearance space between the door and jamb, the tumbler means being mounted for oscillatory movement by the key along a plane determined by the said clearance space.

A device including a casing, a support swingably mounted therein, and key operated tumbler means mounted on the support, said tumbler means including -a key receiving portion in proximity to the pivot and secured in fixed relation to the support,and a complemental relatively movable portion slidingly mounted on the support'and engageable with a relatively stationary element of the casing for preventing tiltingl movement of the support in the locked position of the tumbler means, whereby upon insertion of a key the complemental portion is slidable into released position for permitting swinging movement of the support.
