M. HATHAWAY LATCH Filed Nov. 20. 1924 Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES MONROE HATHAWAY, OF RCE LAKE, WISCONSIN.
LATCH.
Application led November 20, 1924. Serial No. 751,118.
To all Lv/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE HA'ri-IAwAY, a citizen of the United States, residing;- at Rice Lake, in the county of Barron and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in latches and has relation more particularly to a device `of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with barn doors and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide adevice of this kind having novel and improved means whereby the holding bolt or member may be operated from either side of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby a padlock or the like may be employed for effectively holding the latch in closed position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im-` proved latch whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features `of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a latch constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention' Figure 2 is also a fragmentary view in elevation of my improved latch as herein disclosed with the sliding bolt or member in open position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substan tially on the line 3-3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the sliding bolt or member unapplied;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the keeper unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, D denotes a portion of a door and F an associated portion of the door frame. One face of the door has lsecured thereto,
as at l, by stove bolts or the like the guide loops 2 which slidably support the latch or bolt member 3. Secured, as at 4, by stovebolts or the like to the door frame F is a keeper 5 which is adapted to receive the outer end of the latch or bolt member 3 when extended. The inner portion of the keeper 5 is provided with an outstanding lip or flange 6 with which is adapted to contact or abut an outstanding flange 7 carried by the latch or bolt member 3 at a desired point inwardly of the outer end of such member. These flanges 6 and 7 are provided with the openings 8 through which is adapted to be inserted the shackle of a padlock or the like in order to effectively hold c or lock the latch 3 in its extended or working' position.
In swiveled connection with the member 3 at a desired point between the guide loops 2 is a side arm a of a substantially U-shaped ope-rating member 9. The second side arm has its free end portion inwardly offset, as at 10, the outer straight portion 11 of said side arm being disposed through the door D and extends beyond the opposite face of the door. To said extended portion is se- -cured an operating member 12 which may be threaded or otherwise suitably secured in place. adapted to be manually operated to effect the requisite swinging movement of the member 9 to move the latch or bolt member 3 into either extended or retracted position as may be required. The member 9 also provides means whereby said member 3 may be manually operated from either side of the c oor.
The portion 11 of the member 9 is initially of such length to permit it to be properly disposed through doors of varying thicknesses.
The outer portion of the lip or flange 6 is disposed on a desired bevel as indicated at 6a while the outer end of the latch or bolt member 3 is also provided with a suitable bevel 3a so that when the door D is swung into closed position the bevels 3a and 6a will This operating` member 12 is coact in a well-known manner to effect rounding the side arm a. This spring 14 also bears against an outstanding lip 17 carried by the inner guide loop 2 through which the rod 15 is freely disposed. The spring 14 also bears against, as herein disclosed, a Washer 18 surrounding the rod 17 and positioned immediately adjacent to the eye 16.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a latch constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the vseveral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A latch mechanism comprising, in combination with a closure member, a sliding bolt supported by one side of the closure member, a substantially U-shaped operating member having a side arm in sWiveled connection with the bolt, the second side arm of the operating member being disposed through the closure member and projecting beyond the opposite side thereof, and means carried by said extended portion of said second side arm for moving the operating member to retract or extend the bolt.
2. A latch mechanism comprising, in combination with a closure member, a sliding bolt supported by one side of the closure member, a substantially U-shaped operating member having a side arm in sWiveled connection With the bolt, the second side arm of the operating member being disposed through the closure member and projecting beyond the opposite side thereof, and means carried by said extended portion of said second side arm for moving the operating member to retract or extend the bolt, the portion of said second arm disposed through the closure member being offset With respect to the inner portion of said side arm.
3. A latch mechanism comprising, in combination, With a closure member, a sliding bolt supported by one side of the closure member, a substantially U-shaped operating member having a side arm in siviveled connection With the bolt, the second side arm of the operating member being disposed through the closure member and projecting beyond the opposite side thereof, means carried by said extended portion of said second side arm for moving the operating member to retract or extend the bolt, and means coacting with the operating member for constantly urging the sliding bolt outwardly.
4. A latch mechanism comprising, in combination With a closure member, a sliding bolt supportedvbyone side of the closure member, -a substantially U-shaped operating member havingr-. side arm in sWiveled connection with the bolt, the second side arm of the operating member being disposed through the closure member and projecting beyond the opposite side thereof, means carried by said extended portion of said second side arm for moving the operating member to retract or extend the bolt, a guide member for the sliding bolt, a rod operatively engaged with the operating member and freely engaged with the guide member, and a spring encircling the rod and operating to urge the sliding bolt outwardly.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature.
MONROE HATHAWAY.
