DOOR-HOLDING ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 14, 1926 Serial No. 129,229. I
This invention pertains particularly to a door-holding device which is adapted to automatically latch a door in the open position. The primary object of the invention 5 is to provide an improved device of this character which can be manufactured at moderate cost, which can be readily applied to a door, and which will present a pleasing appearance and also will serve to hold the in door staunchly andreliably in open position.
A .featureof the present invention is the r provision of a simplea'nd effective device for enabling the latch tobe released from'the inner side ofthe door; and another feature of the invention is a novel keeper provided with a guide equip ed at opposite ends with latch-shoulders, a apting the keeper to be.
used either as a right or left keeper.
Preferably, the improved attachment is connected with the door post and'the door at about the horizontal center line of the door, and extending over the central hinge of the door, where such hinge is employed. 7 The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment -in the accompanying drawing, in whichy Fig. 1 is a broken elevational view show ing a fragment of a door-postand a door hingedly connected therewith, and showing plied thereto; Fig. 2, a broken horizontal sectional view taken as indicated at line 2-2 on Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a fragmentary sectional view showing the door in openposition; Fig. 4, a broken vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 4 on Fig. 1 Fig. 5, a rear or inner elevational view of the I elongated keeper employed, the view showing also a.-portion of the connecting rod employed; and Fig. 6, a broken vertical section'alview on an enlarged scale, the section being taken as indicated at line 6 on Fig. 1. f In the construction illustrated, A. designates a post, or door-sup ort; Bdesignates a door connected with t e memberA. by
hinges B (one. shown and C designates the improved door-hol ing attachment, having associated therewitha latch-releasing device C.
The im roved door-holding attachment is particular y useful in connection with ga rage doors, but may be employed in connection with swinging barn doors, or in other similar situations. It will be understood that the, door jamb, or door support, A may be of any suitable construction, and that any desired number of hinges may be employed for carrying the door.
The door-holding attachment C comprises a hinge member' 1'; a connecting rod 2 pivotally connectedwith said hinge member; and an elongated keeper 3 provided with a suitable guide interlockingly but slidably engaged by a head with which the connecting rod 2, is equipped.
The hinge member 1' is provided with eyes '1 separated by a space which accommodates freely the pivot portion 2 ofthe connecting rod. A readily removable pintlel extends through the eyes 1 and serves as a pivot-for the rod 2. The connection at this point is loose enough to permit the opposite end 'of the, rod 2 to drop the necessary amount to effect, the latching connection.
"The keeper3 preferably is in the form of walls 3 of thethese recesses are preferably undercut, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The keeper 3V is secured, by means of screws 4,
to the central cross member 5 of the door. also the improved door-holding device ap- The keeper" 3, as thus described, afi'ords backbf the front wall of the boss 3, a-
space or chamber 6 Which is adapted to accommodate the flanged head 2 with which The eye 2* of the rod may be passed readily through the slot 3* from'the rear of the keeper inmaking' the connection between the keeper and the connecting rod.
In the operation of the device,'the inward- 1 1y turned portion of the rod designated 2, is adapted to drop into the notch or recess 3 at thef far end, of the keeper when the door is swung to the open position. On the other hand, the notch 3 at the inner end of the keeper isso positioned that it cannot be engaged by the latch member when the door is in closedposition.
The latch-releasing device C preferably consists of a bell-crank lever journalled in a perforation in an eye 7 which is formed integrally with the end-portion of the keeper,
The eye '1' is duplicated. at th'e two ends of the keeper for purpose of adapting the keeper to be used as aright and left-"keeper.
The bell-crank preferably is formed from-a' rod bent to afford a pivot-portion 8 and an arm 8. The pivot-portion extends through the eye 7 and a registering perforation '9 with which the door is provided. Normally,
the arm 8 depends vertically from the pivot,
1* but when the pivot, or shaft, 8 is turned in the properdirection, the arm-8" will engage the portion Q of the :latch-link, or connecting-rod 2 and lift the latch-link from en- ,gagement with the -notc h 3.. "The shaft, or
,pivot, 8 has secured on its rear. or inner end anaetuatingi arm,or handle, .8", Thisarm is shown prov ded with a perforate hub-portion whrch aslips onto the shaft and :is removably In the illustration given, ,t he door-holding attachment is shown applied to a door located at the r-ight of the door-support A. Obviously. however, the attachment may be appliedwhere the door is located at the left be noted from Fig. 2 that the parts are so disposed that when-the door is in the-closed vposition, the latch-linkfiextends across and in close proximity to the eye-portion of the hinge B'.
Ordinarily, the :leaf of the hinge 1 would be attached to thedoor-support A in such .position that the end-edge of the leaf will bear against the rear edge of the lfiXCCl leaf of the hinge B of the ,door.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for. clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art. I
hat I regard as new, anddesireto secure by Letters Patent, is: i
