Patented May 14, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in windows, and has particular reference to a easement window wherein both sides of the window may be easily washed.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a device of this character which may be employed with the ordinary easement window.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction, and therefore economical to manufacture.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which, to all intents and purposes, appears as anordinary hinge.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
Inthe accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a windowequipped With my hinge;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail fragmentary View showing the window swung in for the purpose of washing the outside of the window;
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the hinge parts;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the latch; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail perspective View of the window sill and window frame.
The ordinary easement window merelyswings outwardly from the window frame, with a result that it is almost impossible to wash the outside of the window pane from the inside of a building.
Applicant has therefore devised a simple hinge arrangement whereby the window may be swung upon a second pintle when the same has been released frorn its ordinary swinging position, and can then be moved into the room for washing the outside thereof.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an ordinary window frame having a window sill 6 and drain board l, To this drain board `is attached a pivoted bottom stop 8. 'Ihe sash I ly hinged to center plates I3 and Ill respectively,
, as by pintles I6 and I l respectively. Extending between the plates I3 and I4 is an angle member I8, which serves to strengthen the hinge as is desired to wash the outer side of the window. 10
This catch 23 extends on both sides of the angle member I8 so that when the screw-head 26 passes through a notch 20 formed in the angle member, the same will be rigidly held.
The manner of operating my device is as follower- Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, which is the ordinary hinge condition of the window, and it is desired to swing the window so as to have the outer surface within the room, the catch 23 is raised so as to disengage the bifurcated portion from the screw head 26, after which the window may be moved about the rod 22 and swung into `the room as best illustrated in Fig. 3. When moving the window into the room, it is first necessary to move the stop 8 to the full line position of Fig. 2, which permits the lower portion of the sash to pass through the window frame.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred `example of th-e same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted `to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a pair of hinge plates, a second pair of hinge plates hinged to said rst mentioned plates, and a third pair of hinge plates adapted to be attached to a closure and hinged to said second mentioned hinge plates, a rod extending between and forming a pintle for the pivotal connection between said second mentioned hinge plates and said third mentioned hinge plates, and a sliding latch mounted on said rod adapted to co-operate with a screw carried by the closure.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of hinge plates secured to a window frame, aseoond pair of hinge plates pivoted to said first mentioned hinge plates, an angle member extending between said second mentioned hinge plates, said angle member having a notch formed therein, a third pair of hinge plates adapted to be attached to a closure and pivoted to said second mentioned tioned on said rod, said catch straddling said hinge plates, a rod extending between said last angle member and being adapted to engage a mentioned hingedly engaged plates and forming screw carried b-y said closure when said closure a pintle for the pivotal connection between said is moved to project said screw through said l second mentioned hinge plates and said third notch.
mentioned hinge plates, a catch sllidably posi- WILLIAM FAIRLEY.
