rlhe primary object of this invention, is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, having novel means of locking the sliding stiles against vertical movement whereby the sliding stiles may Abe locked from the inside of the building to prevent the admittance of unauthorized persons.
A still further object of this invention, is to provide a window construction of the above character having a novel form of locking means for locking the hinged sashes in their closed position comprising screw threaded rods passing therethrough and entering screw threaded bushings in the sliding stiles.
A still further object of this invention, is to provide a window construction of the above mentioned character having vertically hinged sashes whereby the saine may be opened inwardly for the purpose of easily cleaning the transparent panes by washing or the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description, forming a part of this specification and wherein like reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same wherein in the drawings is shown in Figure 1 a plan view of the window construction illustratin o the arrangement of the vertically pivoted sash frames relative to the vertically sliding stiles.

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view showing the free ends of the vertically pivoted sash frame presented to the sliding stiles.

in the drawings wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein for the purpose of more clearly illustrating the invention in detail, the reference character A will generally be employed to designate the wall of a building or the like having an opening for receiving a rectangular hollow metal window frame 10 having lateral flanges 11 and 12 on the opposite sides thereof. The rectangular metal frame pieces 10 are held in place by ornamental wainscoating 13 and 14 secured to the wall A 75 on opposite sides of the rectangular metal frame pieces 10.
Slidably mounted on opposite sides of the lateral flange 12 is a pair of sliding stiles 14; and which are adapted to slide between the wainseoating 13 and 111 and the lateral flange 12, as best illustrated in Figures 6 and 7. Hingedly secured to the sliding stiles 15 is a vertically pivoted window frame 16 by means of suitable hinges 17. One of the hinges 17 may be of the multiple pintle type in order that the inner swinging sash 16 may swing to a position shown in Figure 7 out of the path of the outer swinging window sash 16. Flach of the vertically pivoted sash '90 frames 16 are provided with transparent panes 18 and are held in place in the usual manner.
rlhe sliding stiles 14 are provided with transverse openings 19 adapted to receive screw threaded bushings 20 which-may be anchored in place well known in this type of screw threaded hold. Corresponding lateral openings 2O and 21 in the vertically pivoted sash frames 16 are adapted to receive 100 locking bolts 22 having screw threaded ends 23 at one end adapted to be received in the screw threaded bushings 2O of the sliding stiles 14, whereby the vertically pivoted sash frames may be held in a locked position relative to the sliding stiles 14 and 15.
Locking pins 30 are adapted to pass through the vertically sliding stiles 14 and through the lateral flanges 19, as more clearly shown in Figure 3, to hold the sash frames and the sliding stiles against vertical movement. The usual type of window fastener 31 is provided on the vertically pivoted sash frames 15 for holding the same against further vertical sliding movement.
It is to be understood that the form of invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoining claim.
lVhat I claim is A window construction of the character described, comprising pairs of slidably mounted stiles, the stiles of each pair being arranged at inner and outer sides, respectively, oi" the window construction, the outer stile of each pair being of a width greater than the width of the inner stile, a vertically hinged sash frame attached to the inner edge of each stile of one pair, and adapted to be swung laterally, the inner sash frame being double hinged on multiple pintles and adapted to be swung out of the path of the outer sash frame, and into engagement with the window frame to occupy a position at right angles to the plane of the window opening and the outer sash being limited in its opening movement by abutting contact with the inner stile to occupy a position parallel with the opened inner sash, and means for detachably securing the other sides of the sashes to the respective stiles at the other side of the window construction.
