12 Claims.
My invention relates to a door construction, and more particularly to a combination window and screen for a door.
An important object of the invention is to provide means for connecting, end to end, a screen and a window, in a door construction, whereby they are moved simultaneously. That is, as the screen is moved out of the door opening, the window proportionately moves into the door opening, and vice versa.
My invention also has for its objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, easily installed in a working position and easily disconnected therefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple, and of general superiority and serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and ar-' rangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing an embodiment of the foregoing objects, showing the window in a lowered position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, transverse section of said embodiment, but indicating the window in a raised position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a handle comprised in the invention.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numbers l2 and i3 designate the top and bottom stiles of a door construction. Side stiles are shown at 14 and I5, and the center mullionat 16. Panels l1 and i8 are arranged between 31 in the upper stile I2.

At the bottom of the space H! between the panels are beveled blocks 22 and 23 that direct any moisture that enters the space 19, to an inclined vent 24.
A recess 25 in the top stile i2 houses a roller 26, upon which the screen'21 is wound. The screen may be a plastic, perforate screen, a copper, woven screen, or any other suitable perforate material. The lower edge of the screen 21. is fastened to the window 20 by means hereinafter described.
The roller 26 has a slot 28 in which the upper edge of the screen 21 is inserted. Then a strip 29 is driven in the slot 28, wedging the edge of the screen therein. An end of the roller 26 is encased in a cap 30. This cap rotates in a sleeve 3|. The cap and sleeve are preferably of wearresisting material; e. g., metal.
The capped end of the roller 26 is apertured at 32 to receive the end of wire 33 which coils about the roller. The opposite end of the wire is connected with a helical spring 34 that is an chored by a hook 35. The wire 33 ahdspring 34 are disposed to move lengthwise in a bore 36 in the stile M of the door. The end of the roller 26, opposite to the capped end, turns in a journal A cover plate 38 enplace, as suggested at 39.
A control-lever 40 is pivoted on a screw 4|, to swing between the stile l2 and the cover 38. The lever 46 has a detent 42, which in one position of the lever 40 is opposite a pin 43. The pin 43 has a round head 44. A spring tends to move the head 44 to an engaging position with a plate 46 on a handle 41. When the detent 42 is not in engagement with the pin 43, the plate 46 and the window 20'may be lowered, since the headed pin 43 acts as a spring catch in connection with the flange 48 of the plate 46. However, when the lever 46 is moved to a position in which the detent 42 is opposite the pin 43, movement of the head 44 to the left in Fig. 2 is thereby prevented, thus locking the window 20 in its closed position. It is to be understood that the lever 40 is on the inside of the door, so as to prevent anyone on the outside from lowering the glass and breaking through the screen 21.
Welded back to back with the plate 46 is a channel-shaped member 49, provided with an inward flange 50. A clamping strip 5| for the screen 21 has a portion 52 folded upon itself. In assemblying, the screen 21 is placed around the inner surface of the channel 49, and the strip 5| is then forced into the channel until a strip portion 52 engages under the flange 50, thus clamping the lower end of screen 21 in the channel 49.
A U-shaped strip 53 is arranged within the handle 41 to re-enforce same. A gripping strip 54 engages over the top of the window 20, and is in turn engaged by a flange 55 depending from the handle 41. A resilient pad 62 is placed over the upper edge of glass-20 beneath the gripping strip 54.

While I'have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodimentof my invention, the construction is, ofwUrSasubject to modifications without departing from .the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myselfi-to the particular form of construction illustrated and described,'but-,desire to avail myself of all;modifications that may fall within thescope of. the-appended claims.

2. In a .door..constructionhavingan.opening therethru, the combination of a screen, a window connected edge-to-edge with the screen, the screen and window being mounted on the door to slide to and from positions at the opening, a roller journaled on the door and connected to roll up the screen as the window is moved into the opening and to unroll the screen as the window is moved from the opening, the window carrying an abutment, a latch mounted on the door, resilient means urging said latchinto the path of the window abutment, the latch having a curved face that is engaged by the abutment, and movable lever locking means adapted to lock the latch in a window-locking position and to be moved to a window-releasing position.
3. In a door construction having an opening therethru, the combination of a screen, a window, the screen and window being mounted on the door means connecting the screen and window in edge-abutting positions comprising a resilient channel shaped member on the window having an abutment and aclamping member clamping the screen in the. channel and having abutment means to engage the abutment of the channel member to prevent accidentalodisplaces ment of one member from the other, the resilience of the channel member resiliently opposing removal of the clamping member and the screen from the channel, and a roller journaled on the door and connected to roll up the-screen as the. window is moved into the opening-and-to-unroll the screen. as the window is moved from the opening.
4. In a door construction having an. opening therethru, thecombination of a screen, a window connected edge-to-edge with the screen, the door having spaced panels adjacentthe opening and the window being mounted on the door to. be moved from between the. panels to a..position' closing the opening and return, an-inclined sur face at the bottom of the space between the panels, the door having a vent extending from a lower portion of the inclined surface to the bottom of the door, and a roller journaled on the door and connected to roll up the screen. as the window is moved into the opening and to unroll the screen as the windowis moved-from. the opening.

In a door constructionv having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen and a window mounted on the door,- means connecting the screen and window in edge to-edge relation, comprising a channel member, means cooperating with said channelmember-to' clamp. said screen in said channel member, and a roller on the door to roll up the screen as thewindow is moved into the opening and to unroll the screen as the window. is moved 'fromth s opening.
6. In a door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a-screenand a window mountedon. thedoor, means connecting the screen and window inedge abutting positions comprising a resilient channel member associated with the window and provided with an abutment, means cooperating with-saidchannel member to clamp said screen insaid'channel member, saidmeans having an abutment which cooperates with said first-named. abutment'toprevent dissociation ofsaid clamping means from said channel means, and a rolleron the doorto roll up the screen as the window is moved into the opening and to unroll the screen as thewindowis moved from the opening.
7. In a door constructionhavingan opening therethrough, the combination of a screen, a"
window mounted on the door connected edge to edge with the screen, a roller on the door to roll up the screen as the window is moved into the opening and to unroll the screen as the window is moved from the opening, an abutment on the Window, a latch mounted on the door and disposed in the path of said abutment, and means on the door to lock the latch in a window locking position or to be moved to a window releasing position.
8. In a door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen, a window, a channel member secured to said window, a member cooperating with said channel member to clamp said screen in edge to edge relation with said window, the screen and window being mounted on the door to slide to and from positions at the opening, an abutment on said window, a latch mounted on said door and disposed in the path of said abutment, and a lever on the door to control the looking or releasing position of the latch.
. 9. In a door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen and a window mounted on the door, a channel member secured to said window, means for clamping said screen in said channel member, and a roller on the door to roll up and unroll said screen as the window is moved respectively into and from the door opening.
10. In a, door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen and a Window mounted on the door, mutually inter.-
locking means for connecting the screen and window in end to end'relation, one of said means having an abutment, a latch on said door disposed in the path of said abutment, and means to lock said latch in window looking or to be moved to window releasing position.
11. In a door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen and a window mounted on the door, mutually 00- operating means associated with the window for clamping the screen in end to end relation with the window, at least one of said means being resilient, the door having spaced panels adjacent the opening and the window being slidably mounted therebetween to be moved to closing or opening positions, said door having a vent in the bottom thereof, and an inclined surface to deflect moisture to said vent.
12. In a door construction having an opening therethrough, the combination of a screen and a window mounted on the door, means connecting the screen andwindow in edge abutting position, comprising a resilient member attached to said window and having an abutment, and a member cooperating with said resilient member to clamp said screen under the abutment of said resilient member, said abutment locking said cooperating member against dissociation from said resilient member, a latch on said door, and means to hold said latch in window locking and to be moved to window releasing position,
