Description
Dec. 8 1925 1.564344 J. D. GARDNER SASH ADJUSTER AND FASTENER Filed Aug. 6. 1923 Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES JOHN D. GARDNER, 0F PHOENIX, ARIZONA.
SASH ADJUSTER AND rasrnivnn.
Application filed August 6, 1923. Serial No. 656,083.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. GARDNER, a citizen of the United 'States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and. State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Adjusters and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. 5 j
The present invention has reference generally to that class of inventions known as builders hardware and more particularly relates to an improved window sash adjuster and fastener.
As the'primary aim and object the invention consists in the provision of a device of the above character embodying a manually operable arcuate sash carried arm in combination with an improved. finger operable fastener for engagement with the arm for holding the sash in various positions of adjustment with respect to the window frame.
More particularly the invention embraces the provision of a fastener shaped to form a guide for the arm and embodying a finger piece or catch having a stud for removable engagement with perforations in the arm.
A further and more specific object includes the integral formation of an attaching flange and a handle on the arm; and to construct both the arm and the guide and catch so that the same may be readily applied to sashes, etc., without altering the construction or disfiguring the frame or sash.
Among the other aims and objects of the invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness and wherein the Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a window frame and horizontally swinging sashes showing in plan the improved adjuster and fastener applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the arm.
Figure 3 is'a perspective view of the combmed guide and catch 1n closed position and,
F lgure 4- 1s a s1m1lar view showing the catch in open position. 1
Similar characters of reference are emv ployed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawingsthere is provided a window frame generally designated 1' in the opposite sides of which are mounted for horizontal swinging movement vertically vals with openings 5. A perpendicular and I laterally disposed attaching flange 6 is formed integral with outer end of each arm and is adapted to be secured to the lower rail of the adjacent sash 2 by suitable fastening devices. A handle 7 extends at an angle from the inner end of each arm being provided with a knot to facilitate the adjustment of the sash.
Coacting' with each arm is a combined guide and fastener generally designated by the numeral 8 in the form of a channelled body portion 9 provided with a laterally eX-, tending upright lug 10 near one end. Each body is secured to the sill by a screw 11 while the adjacent arm'slides between the sides of i the channelled body so as to be guided. thereby. A catch in the form of a finger piece 12 has the reduced inner end 13 pivoted as at 14 for vertical swinging movement to each upright lug 10 so that the outer en'- larged finger engaging portion may be swung to lie over the channelled body and at the same time permit of the depending stud 15 toengage with one of the openings 5 and latch the arm against sliding movement consequently maintaining the corresponding sash in the desired position of adjustment.
In use assuming that the parts have been constructed and assembled in the manner described it is to be understood that the arms pass beneath notches or slots 16 in the weather stripping or raised portions of the sill adjacent the sash while the arms 4, when the sashes are in closed position extend or lie to the sides of the Window frame above the sill as indicated. It is also to be noted that the handles 7 coact with the adjacent edges of the channelled bodies of the combined guides and fasteners to act as stops for limiting the outward swinging movement of the sashes.
It is likewise apparent that various modifications may be made as to the sizes and arrangement of the parts to adapt the invention, to shutters, shades, flaps, etc.,,pr0vided such. changes fall within the terms of the claim.
It, is, believedv in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the. in-
'vention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily-apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed, as new and desired t-o'be secured by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described an arcuate and relatively flat metalarm having suitably spaced openings therein, a sash attaching flange integral with one end thereof, a handle on the inner end of the arm, the flange being connected to a sash so that the arm and handle thereof lie to one side of the main frame when the sash is closed, a combined guide and fastener on-the sill of the frame, including a channeled keeper for slidably receiving the arm, a laterally disposed and upright lug integral with one side thereof, a catch in the form of a finger piece the reduced inner end, of which 1s pivoted to the lug, a stud depending from the inner face of the finger piece and engageable, with one of the openings in the arm when the finger piece is swung over the channeled keeper for releasably securing the arm and the keeper coacting, with the handle to form a stop.
In'testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. 7 v 5 JOHN D. GARDNER.
